Alternate route to Outer Banks?

I'm going down to the Outer Banks (Hatteras area) this weekend. I've heard that traffic on 168 is HORRIBLE. Does anyone know any alternate routes to the southern beaches from the DC area? Thaaaaaaaaanks.

When you get to Petersburg VA, via I-95, look for the signs to U.S. 64, and follow those :) Alternate routes are along the way, I believe.
