Sororities
I am really confused. I do not understand joining sororities. All the ones I have looked at on my campus are associated with music or business. I thought a sorority could just be a group of people bonded together through friendship. Do you have to be interested in music or something to join certain sororities? Thanks!
 |
I'm not sure about any other types of sororities/fraternities, so I guess I can only speak about the two that I know of.
There are basically four types of GLOs: social (aka "general"), professional, service, and honorary. Professional: Some greek lettered organizations were founded around a basic interest... like business for example. Delta Sigma Pi (co-ed business professional fraternity) was basically intended for men and women majoring in business in college, so interact, network, bond with each other. You can get a better idea of what I mean by reading the purpose from the website: Quote:
Some "interest" or professional GLOs have certain requirements. Like Delta Sigma Pi for example - you have to be a business major. I think there are some music fraternities and sorority that in order to become a member you have to be a music major, or maybe just have an interest in music. Social/General: Social/General sororities have no requirements as far as your major in college or if you're interested in business or music or art or math or whatever. These ones usually have a council on the school which acts as a governing body to all the sororities on the campus. They mainly focus on meeting new people, building bonds with each other, having social events, and doing philanthropy work. If this is the type of sorority you are interested in, try to find contact information for the Office of Greek Life (or Student Activities on some campuses) and ask about when recruitment starts on your school. Service: Obviously involves a group of people who focus on community service in addition to building bonds with one another. Honorary: Usually honorary GLOs "honor" students that have high GPAs. I think those you have to be asked to join (although I wouldn't know... b/c I'm not in one! lol) and you obviously have to meet requirements in order to become a member. These can be found in different schools (i.e. The College of Business, Arts & Sciences) and I am not sure, but I *think* Order of Omega might fall into this category even know it's not a fraternity/sorority per se. ========== I hope this helped you. One thing to remember is that you don't have to limit yourself to one type of GLO. Me for example, I'm in a professional and social one. One thing you usually cannot do, it initate into two types of the same organization. Like since I'm already in a co-ed business fraternity, I cannot become a member of another one. Also NPC sororities have a rule that says once you initiate into one, you cannot initate into another from the NPC.... but that doesn't stop you from joining a service GLO or honorary GLO. (I don't think honorary GLOs have any limits, but I could be wrong b/c like I said, I'm not in one :p ) |

It's quite possible that your campus does not have any social GLOs. Some campuses permit "special interest" orgs like Sigma Alpha Iota, Tau Beta Sigma, etc but not socials. Yes, you DO have to be interested in music (or other things) to join sororities/fraternities with that aim. General/social sororities, you do not. What school do you go to? |

chrisymae,
There is a big world out there!:) As was pointed out, there are many Types of GLOs. Greek Letter Organizations. Many or Most are Social GLOs! Check Stetsons Web Sites before you go there and decide for yourself what you want to look at! Go through Recruitment and take a look see. You are the only one to make your decision!:) God, I was glad to Go To College, I went to a School that I knew no one. I met a lot of Great People! You Will Too! |
Yay! Good luck with Greek life, I am sure you will love it. :)

Zeta Tau Alpha just re-did their web site. Check it out!
http://www.zetataualpha.org Going greek was a great experience, one I would never change for the world! ZTA gave me so much, and I gave much back (you tend to even without knowing it). Make certain to visit each of the houses or chapter rooms, and get to know the sisters in the organizations. See where you fit best. Good luck in school, and keep us all posted. |
Alpha Chi Omega was founded by music students, but we are not a music sorority. We have a philanthropy that focuses on the arts, but you don't have to be musical yourself to join :) I hope you decide to go through recruitment! Good luck
