Elevator Crash Kills New York City Man

NEW YORK (AP) - A freight elevator suddenly shot upward, crashing into top bulkhead of a 37-story office building in Times Square, killing one person, authorities said.

Security guard and elevator operator Carl DeClercq, 63, was declared dead at the scene Thursday afternoon, police said.

DeClercq was going down in the elevator at the end of his shift when it shot up and crashed into the bottom of the roof at the 37th floor, authorities said.

After the accident, another elevator carrying two people dropped to the ground floor but the passengers were not injured and were only briefly stranded, police said. It was unclear how far the elevator fell before it stalled.

Makes you wonder how safe some elevators are. Those other 11 people are lucky.

If I even look inside of an elevator, I can't breathe and almost start to hyperventilate.

Now reading that story, I'm trying to take deep breaths. Seriously, this is why I do NOT go into those death traps!

Co-sign. I'd rather climb several flights of stairs than to ride an elevator. If I have to go higher than 6 floors, I'm not going up there at all! I can only climb so many stairs. Good thing I don't live in NY or Chicago.
