All the talk I'd heard on Radio America and read in the op-eds about who would replace Jack "I like public Sex" Ryan on the GOP ticket- and I dont remember anyone saying Alan Keyes.

His entry into the race sets up the first Senate contest between two black candidates in U.S. history.

After all his badmouthing about Hilary Clinton running for NY seat because wasn't a long-time resident of NY, now he is running for seat in IL and still has not bought an house there. Besides the fact he not a resident, on his last try for the Senate in his home state MD, he only got 29% of the vote ( a state that has a republican governor), so this will probably be an runaway victory for Obama

I really like Keyes. He'll lose (as usual), but he'd make an excellent public official.

Yes agreed, but it was most of us New Yorkers who felt as if she was just ocming in and had no ties. As for Keyes I think he knows his chances are low but it's not just about winning the election - it's also about highlighting certain issues, like many a Democrat has done.

I'm inclined to believe that too. I think the GOP thinks the seat is a loss after several established IL republicans said no. They are now using this has an opportunity to show the nation how welcoming they are so they can add something else to the Black audience other than we are the party of Lincoln

Yeah the first enforcement of affirmative action by Nixon and a diverse set of prominent cabinet members pale in comparison to the accomplishments of Republicans against slavery.

However it also the Republican party that is one of the biggest opponents of AA ( the White House sent an opinion to the Supreme Court during the Michigan Case) Also, people of color in his cabinet doesn't make the party more appealing, if the platform remains the same (Something that many people refuse to believe, we don't vote purely because we see people who look like us, otherwise I think we would have more women politicians) and hence why even with the addition of Powell and Rice in the cabinet, Bush is not expected to pull more than 10% of the Black vote. But, I think instead of changing the platform to attract more voters ( I am not saying they should, but they would have to for ME to switch parties), They are doing something alot easier and won't cost them their base, showing "hey we got minorities too" ex 2000 convention. The reason I said the lincoln comment I belong to a couple of organizations where many republicans have hit during the campagn trail, and every one mentioned the Party of Lincoln thing several times, on one candidates speech I lost count, so Rudey you need to tell them to update their accomplishments.

I wouldn't say that the Iliini Republicans just picked out a "token black guy;" Keyes has run for office before and is a reasonable choice for the ticket.

He has run but has he ever won anything...

True...but I think like Rudey said it's a matter of getting his views out there (such as a Kucinich, Sharpton, etc.).

Most of us New Yorkers voted for Hilary.

And a lot of us didn't.

I guess nobody can enter into politics anymore at this point. Only the people that have been in it before can. And Keyes has served the public before while working in the State department.

By the way I'm still waiting to hear about any legislation that Edwards has worked on that's passed and to what extent his involvement was.
