Pet rabbit's mysterious death

A friend that I work with is distraught today because she found her pet New Zealand white rabbit dead this morning. The rabbit lives outside, and my friend recently decided to allow her to roam freely around the fenced-in yard. This went fine without incident for over a week. But apparently last night, somebody had it in for the bunny.

My friend said that it doesn't look like the work of an animal because the body is untouched... just the head is gone. And she said that it's a fairly clean cut. So it looks like a person did it. Besides, an animal wouldn't have jumped back over the fence with the head. And an animal probably would have at least damaged the body, if it didn't eat it.

If a person did it, it was a cruel and horrible thing to do. Does anyone know of any weird rituals or anything that might explain why someone would have taken off with the head?

I don't know about any rituals, but it could be a sadistic mofo that doesn't like her or didn't like the bunny. how sad.

That's so awful  :(

Did you friend call the police. Maybe they've had reports of animal cruelty in the area and they might have some idea who could have done this.

No, she hasn't called the police, but that's a good suggestion. Even if they never find out who did it, it can't hurt to have a report on file in case it does happen again in the area. Or like you said, if it has happened before.

OMG

Poor bunny:(

When the police find the killer, he/she should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law when found.

Good Lord! WTF?

I would second calling in a police report. I don't know if the police will actually do anything, but at least report that it happened.

Peaches-n-Cream 08-05-2004 11:50 AM

Poor bunny. I agree that your friend should call the police.

The police might not do anything right away if this is the first incident, but I would think/hope that they would do something if there have been a string of incidents.

Definitly have your friend file a report.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-05-2004 11:56 AM

YES report it.

Yours may be the 1st.... but think about it this way: if a kid does this to 12 bunnies and only 1 person files a report w/ the police, if he's caught and charged, he's charged with 1 count. Not the 12 he deserves.

Rio_Kohitsuji 08-05-2004 12:47 PM

That is just SICK. I also co-sign on reporting it!!

bethany1982 08-05-2004 01:19 PM

That's sad. I agree about the police, though it's not likely anything will ever happen to the sick sob/s that did this, apart from reaping what they sow.

IowaStatePhiPsi 08-05-2004 06:18 PM

poor bunny. :(

Speechpath 08-05-2004 06:21 PM

poor thing!! I would file a report for sure.

winneythepooh7 08-05-2004 06:37 PM

That is so disgusting. Definately file a report with the police and get copies.

labeachgrl 08-05-2004 07:26 PM

I agree with reporting it, while it may be small crime to most police agencies now, if people report more, it'll make a sentence (if they find the person) stick. Also, cruelty to pets is the first indication of sociopathic behavior, if it's happening more and more in your area, a savvy police person may be interested in reporting it to other divisions that track that sort of thing.
