deaf dog
I've been looking on petfinder for a new puppy/dog. I found a few that I was interested in but a few of them were deaf.
Anyone ever have a deaf dog? Are they tough to train? What are the problems? Pm me if you could. |

I had a deaf dog. We taught her visual commands instead of voice commands. The hardest part was getting her attention if she was doing something wrong or if she was someone else and I wanted her to come to me. She was a great dog but couldn't take her out off of her leash because she couldn't hear me. Takes a lot of patience

My next-door neighbors have a deaf dog. She's a very sweet dog, too...very playful and obedient.

I had a friend in high school with a blind dog. She had keen senses otherwise to make up for it... but once in a while she would bump into things.
But I would assume a deaf dog wouldn't be too big of an issue. Especially if they recognize hand signals. |
were you looking at white boxers by any chance? they are predisposed to being deaf. genetic trait along with being white. well it used to be anyways.
it does take a lot more effort and like another gc'er said, visual commands. again, the attention thing can be an issue, especially when they are puppies. you might want to consider a dog that is a lil bit older, like maybe ten months or so. they are still a puppy, but you don't usually have to deal with a lot of the puppy issues like chewing, housebreaking, etc. shelley j sigma k |
