Potty Mouth issues

So I have a question. Do you think that if someone cusses/curses/uses expletives freely, openly, and fairly often, that they portray an image of someone who is of a lower social standing than those who do not use or rarely use any 'bad words'? All other things being equal - such as extensive vocabulary and level of education.

Don't think they are of a lower social standing. Just think they like to curse a lot, lol. Some people could find other words but sometimes nothing gets your point across better than a curse word!:D

No.

I do think those who have potty mouths are more aggressive and uninhibited...or they try to come across that way.

I hate when people cuss or curse in public (especially loudly). It just shows a lack of respect for others.

On the other hand, there are times when I understand it just comes out (i.e. say you just dropped a hammer on your toe or just had a bomb explode by you).

I don't think of a Potty Mouth as being from a lower class, but I do tend to think less of the person if they can't hold a conversation without profanity.

Everyone swears once in a while - but if you save those times for when it's really important, it makes more of an impact!

If I'm under a lot of stress I use the word "mother f*cker* like it's my job.

It's a habit I picked up from being around the sales and trading desks.

Otherwise I tend to watch what I say.

I don't really curse a lot when I speak, but when I talk on IM I swear like a sailor. I don't know why. I guess it looks less abrasive than it sounds.

I agree with what everyone said above about the "social standing" though.

Cursing bothers me, but I don't think that it means someone is lower class socially.

adpialumcsuc 07-30-2004 03:43 PM

Cursing only bothers me when it is done in mass quantity or in public around others and especially children.

There you go.

Cursing is okay in some settings -- like when you're drinking, when you're with certain friends, etc. No big deal. If a friend starts swearing like a sailor in front of my grandmother or kids, I'll have words with them.

cursing, to me, is like that needed punctuation. lol. sometimes, like epitome said, that little dirty word gets your point across.

and i have, regrettably sometimes and sometimes not, cursed loud in public. if i have a bad day and one little something puts me over the edge, i might explode on someone who i would have dealt with in another manner. ex. i was going to a graduation and the night before, i had to drive someone who was drunk home and had the spend the night because it was late. then there was a bunch of traffic getting back to my place so i could change. then the person who was picking me up for the graduation was late. it was hot. we had a hard time with parking. it was hot. when the guy at the door said i couldn't bring in balloons, i flipped on him. to that guy: sorry.:(
