A possible Section Staff position!!!

I recently learned that the chapter that I pledged into has been reassigned to another Section (a new one completely). I contacted the new Section chair for information, and he asked if I would be interested in a position on Section staff. I'm so excited!! I would LOVE to do that, but I'm wondering what kind of time commitment it would be. I'm already pretty swamped, and school hasn't even started yet. Hmmm...

What do you guys and gals think? Have you ever held a staff position? What kind of a commitment was/is it?

I really want to be a good alumna!:)

Gotta love Western PA :)

I figured out once what the Fraternity would look like if every section had the percentage of APO quality schools active that old section 63 does (which became section 62 & 64 in 1990 and 64,65 & 66 this year). We would have about 900 active chapters, and have to start holding conferences in convention centers rather than hotel ballrooms.

Anyway. Congrats!

Staff positions on the section level generally fall into two categories, section representatives(/reps) (often called chapter rep) and "other". Section reps are generally expected to attend chapter meetings and are approved by the chapters they are representative to. "Other" members of section staff are generally assigned to a specific area such as extension, sectional service, fellowship chair, etc. More info is in the national Bylaws at http://www.apo.org/publications/documents/bylaws.pdf , specifically bylaws - Article X - sections.

As for time. My guess with the staff that section 62 had that section reps would only cover one chapter, so one night a week. (theoretically). Attending pledge meetings or service projects would be up to you, and depending also on the relationship with the chapter. You don't want to attend *everything*, you do need a slight bit of "distance" in the relationship. For this reason as well, section chairs will generally only assign staff members to the chapters they were active in if no other solution can be found. You would also need to attend section staff meetings, but that would be probably once a month.

For "other" depends on which job. Sectional Historian in a section with most of its history kept up through S62 & S63 would probably mostly be taking photographs at sectional get togethers and finding a way to get them distributed. I don't know what the new sections intend in terms of net presence. Extension is generally what it says, and you'd work with the regional staff there.

Often staffers start in Rep positions and as their interest as an alumnus becomes more specific move to an "other" position or two.

BTW, for my personal time (over the course of twelve plus years). as a sectional staffer, I was at different times) rep to 2 chapters, rep to 2 extension efforts that became chapters, scouting chair, sectional historian and Vice Chair.

Cool. The great thing about being staff in that area is you won't get lonely... (As opposed to be rep to U of Montana for example)
