http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=37994 but we never got in to the missing chapter that you mentioned. . .very interesting. . .maybe we should email nationals? another point that was made in that thread about colonization. i really wish we were re-colonizing more aggressively. . . i feel like we're in the dark until we recieve a triangle that announces "oh we've colonized at such and such a school. . ." i feel like we're missing in some larger greek systems where we used to have chapters. . .i realize these systems might not be open to expansion at the moment, but still. . . that's just my .02 for now anyway |
All of the greek orgs at Colby were dissolved on May 31, 1984, I believe. I asked that question once on our national bulletin board. And Gamma Xi and Omega both closed sometime in the early 90s, but that's all I know.

The point on the chapter designations is really just a side note. I'm more interested in tracking all of the founding and closing dates for these chapters. I agree that we should be focusing more agressively on recolonizations, but after putting together this list, I'm also concerned about maintaining our existing chapters. As far as I can tell, we lost at least three chapters this year - Mizzou, Dayton and Oregon.

i agree we should be more aggressive about recolonizing. i commented to this effect on the sisters only part of the site and got a semi nasty response from nationals. i said i'd like to know where we are being considered for colonization/recolonization. at least the district in which the potential new chapter would be in. but the sister from nationals basically said that it wouldn't happen b/c for one it would bring down morale for everyone if we didn't end up at a different schools. also that in order to stay competitive with bidding for colonization, we can't put it out there that we are bidding for a spot at xyz school b/c that could attract other glo's who weren't aware that xyz was looking for a new sorority.
hopefully our new national counsel will hold up to what they talked about at convention about wanting to be more aggressive about recolonizing. shelley j sigma k |

We have over 80 dormant chapters. I don't know numbers for all the NPC sororities but I believe Kappa, PiPhi, Theta, Tri-Delta and DG are all between 20 and 40. Zeta is about the same as us. DZ has over 100, but they also have a lot more active chapters. Obviously, national is not going to be able to prevent every chapter from closing, but maybe they're too quick to give up on a chapter. I know my own chapter (Alpha Phi) got a lot of help from national, including live in chapter consultants and even visits from Angela Guillory. But a core group of dedicated girls decided to keep the chapter going and were able to get the numbers up somewhat (no where near competitive on campus, but sustainable). Unfortunately, after two years as a small unhoused chapter, NHQ came in and forced them to close. And they've basically made it impossible for the chapter to ever recolonize. I just can't help but wonder if say Kappa or DG would have kept the chapter open. |
At my campus, our numbers are about 55 gals right now. We had quite a lot of ladies go alum last fall so we took quite a blow & recruited 5 ladies during the spring. We're hoping to really do awesome during this fall RUSH. I know that Delta Gamma has well over 100 members & that TriDelta, GPhiB, APhi, and DZ have higher numbers than us too. The only sorority that has less #'s is AOII BUT they got a lot of help from their NHQ so this past spring, they recruited 17 ladies into their house & I'm sure that they are going to absolsutely give us a run for our money this fall. However, we get do get tons of support from our Corp Board & our alums. The problem we have is that some of our actives don't take it seriously & don't really care.

a lot of what it comes down to with recolonizing a chapter is the alumnae support. the cincinnati alumnae chapter has flat out said they don't care to help alpha iota (miami u) recolonize b/c it is very inconvienent to travel to miami.
as for the efforts to keep a chapter alive, well, i have to say that majority of the time nhq does a pretty good job of this. we had every single field consultant and a few staff from nhq helping us as well as about 6 chapters from around the area. unfortunately, even with all of our efforts, we only got two girls on bid day. we were given a letter of challenge and had a certain number to get up to by fall of the following year, but we decided as a chapter to close. on the flip side though, the kappa gamma chapter was essentially forced closed and this caused quite a fuss around here (dayton). shelley j sigma k |
Tau chapter closed at the end of the 1993-1994 school year, I think. I know it was still active that year, because some of my Alpha Phi Omega brothers were active members of Tau chapter. :)
Tau had a beautiful, fairly new house when it closed. Pi Kappa Phi is there now, but I don't know if they bought the house or if Sigma Kappa still owns it and is renting it to them. But you can go here and click on the "House" button to see what it looked like. The IU office of admissions is also a former Sigma Kappa house, the one they were in before they moved to their last house. Wasn't it said at National Convention this year that we were going to expand & try to recolonize some of our dormant chapters? I am pretty sure someone told me that we were going to go ahead with this.
If so, I hope they try to recolonize first & then open up new chapters at other campuses. Either way though, I think getting some new sisters would be great. |
Sorry to crash, I wanted to supply Pi chapter's close date. I thought it was one of the nine NPC's that were all closed in 1944 (6 of which have returned, though one closed in 1999). However, I did some research and it appears that it closed prior to Stanford's abolishment of sororities. I am rather interested in my alma mater's sorority history, so I am trying to find out the close date/public reason given for my own interest and would be happy to post it here.
And for consideration for re-colonization: Campus climate now: Since the passing of Title IX, sororities have returned to campus, but there is a strong anti-greek sentiment through most of the student body and administration (interesting sidenote: one Dean is a DKE and generally won't admit it - he also comes out as very anti-greek). There are, however 5 sororities (once 6, but DG closed in 1999), something like 13 fraternities, 4 NPHC groups and 4 multicultural groups (only one really has a major foothold - the others have developed in the past 2 or 3 years) I also just heard that they hired someone with a greek background to handle greek affairs, so maybe people are changing their minds? Edited because I'm an idiot and didn't check my facts before posting. |

That would definitely be great if they did. There are so many chapters here in CA but it would be nice to see more open up in other parts of the U.S.
Then again, any new chapter is great IMO. |
