Duke to provide freshmen with iPods
July 21, 2004

DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshmen showing up at Duke University this year will get their own Apple iPod, part of an experiment by the school to see if the popular portable music player can double as a learning tool.

Wish I could have gotten that as a freshman. Would have saved me the money this year.

Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada has been giving students their own IBM laptop since 1999, at least.
I thought about going there just for that, but tuition was really expensive (one of the most expensive provinces) and I didn't want to go that far away.

ETA: But I think an iPod is so much better.

I just emailed my friend who went to Duke for undergrad, he was a Pi Kappa Phi, and anyway he is SO JEALOUS!

How about they win a little basketball and not cost me money instead?

Must be nice.

cash78mere 07-23-2004 11:20 AM

it's probably worked into the tuition somehow.

Ha. Who'd want to go to Duke anyway?

Nah, just kidding. I have a few HS friends that go there and and like it alright, but I wouldn't have been happy there. Durham is like the most unfun town in North Carolina, also. I think I could stand going there for my Ph.D. but as an undergrad it's not really happening. If that makes all of y'all feel better.

This is a big thing in North Carolina for whatever reason.

Wake Forest provides IBM (I think) laptops for all of its students freshman year, and then they get a new one junior year.

Chapel Hill requires incoming freshmen to purchase laptops (at a greatly reduced price I think).

I'm seeing it as a "jumping on the bandwagon" thing. Plus the thing is (as others have pointed out), it's coming out of your tuition. At Wake (where my best friend went) they got free laundry, laptops, and a bunch of other perks but their tuition was a lot higher than Washington and Lee's (at least at first--I haven't compared costs in a year or so). Which is interesting seeing as we're ranked higher. So who knows.

Grove City College in PA gives freshmen laptops that they can keep. i almost went to school there

CarolinaCutie 07-23-2004 04:35 PM

I'm sure it comes out of their tuition.

Like breathesgelatin said, Chapel Hill requires you to purchase a laptop computer. They give you a discount but it was an IBM Thinkpad and it didn't take me very long to discover that it was a piece of crap. I hated that computer and I was so happy to get rid of it and get a new one. It was such a waste of money... I used it in my Chemistry lab for something totally useless, but otherwise I did not carry it to any of my classes or move it out of my dorm when I didn't have to. An iPod would have been much better
