Poker as an Olympic event?

Make poker an Olympic sport, beg players

By Ellie Tzortzi

Athens - Poker aficionados claim their sport is getting a raw deal from the Olympics and are campaigning for a place at the table at the Athens Games.

A group calling itself "Poker in Athens" have said they will not take the exclusion sitting down and have upped the stakes with an online petition calling the bluff of the sporting world.

The group's website (www.pokerinathens.org) says they are "passionately dedicated to bringing poker to the 2004 Games," and demands that poker be given the respect shown to games like chess and bridge.

I knew this would happen once people began to consider synchronized swimming to be a sport.

That would be a great event.

If they make poker an Olympic sport (a snowball's chance in hell of that ever happening! :) ), then they oughta also consider beer drinking as an Olympic-caliber sport as well! Bottoms up!

i hope you're being sarcastic. i managed my college's synchro team and let me tell you, these women are amazing athletes. not only do they have to be good swimmers, but they have to be great gymnasts--both of which are olympic sports. plus they have to be flexible, able to hold their breath while moving (try running and holding your breath!), and, as the name puts it, they have to be synchronized with up to 7 other people!

i hate when people judge what they don't know...

So something being difficult makes it olympic worthy?

Do you give the steroids to the cards or the players?

Thankyou.
I was on my highschool synchronized swimming team. Let me tell you, it is not easy.
I did it for 4 years. Our coach was a task master. She worked our butts off.
I'd like to see some of you try it (the ones that don't consider it a sport)

I know this kid who can paint such cool pieces of art. He said it's hard and wanted to know if the Olympic Committee will let him join but I'm not the decision maker, so I said I don't know.

They're well conditioned, like dancers. Ballet is not an Olympic sport, and synchronized swimming shouldn't be either in my opinion.

Synchronized Swimming looks harder to me than Rythmic Gymnastics. Sorry, though, I find them both pretty dull to watch.

Rudey 07-23-2004 02:11 PM

When will yoga be an olympic sport is the question.

I would say that just because someone doesn't consider it a sport doesn't mean they don't think it's hard. For example, I readily recognize that ballet is extremely difficult and physically demanding and that it requires a great deal of athleticism. But it's an art, not a sport.

I'll put on my flame-protective gear now, but I would take figure skating out of the Olympics for the same reason -- if part of the (very subjective) judging criteria is "artistic merit," then as far as I concerned, it's not a sport. It may be a very, very worthwhile activity, but it's not a sport.

Not a flame, but would you say the same thing for parts of Gynmastics? I see a number of parallels there. By the way, I don't agree with you but understand the argument.
