British Royalty Thread
This is SORT of political, so I put it here....
This is inspired from the ALWebber thread. AlphaSigOU gave me this list of the British Royalty: King/Queen Prince/Princess Duke/Duchess (in German, Herzog/Herzogin) Marquess/Marchioness Earl/Countess (in German, Graf/Gräfin) Viscount/Viscountess Baron/Baroness (most Life Peers are created at this rank) (in German, Freiherr/Freifrau) Ok, one of my favorite movies of all time is Ever After (I can't help it, I'm a sentimetal romantic at heart)...And I have a question relating to it & Royalty (And yes I DO know that I have WAY over-analyzed this). I know the story (at least in that version) takes place in France, but from what I gather, the Royalty system is simalar...my question: If Danielle's (Cinderella's) father is noble enough to marry a Baroness, why then is Danielle not noble? I've done some looking into this and this is the only thing I could come up with: It's possible that the Baroness's first marriage was to someone who was a Baron as a life peerage, and generally, while men don't take their wives' titles, women do take their husband's titles. So then the Baron dies and she marries Danielle's father, who is not necassaily noble, but not a servant either, as he owns land and has servants himself. So then Danielle also would not be noble. BUT if the Baroness got her title from a life-peerage then it would not transfer to her daughters, and Margaruite and Jaquilene would have no more right to marry the Prince then Danielle... Can someone explain to me how this works???  (Also, if anyone else has any British Royalty questions, post them here!!!) |

I don't know about the movie... but the version of the fairy tale I've always heard has Cinderella being noble, and hence "eligible" to marry the prince. It is just how she is treated by her "family" that makes her look common.
The list of title you give is of course... incomplete. There are Grand Dukes and Crown Princes and everything in between! It is also interesting to note that the Rank of Emperor exceeds that of King. Some speculate that Queen Victoria became Empress of India because she didn't like the thought of being out ranked by the Czar of Russia, whom she was related to. (Either sister or daughter, I can't remember). |

On a different note, I had a professor who was SO into the lineage of the various royal families, and now he's a client of mine (I'm a geriatric counselor). He's firmly convinced that I'm the Queen of England, and after a year of trying to convince him otherwise, I've given in, and taken to having my presence announced and wearing a tiara when I need to visit him. He loves it!! |
