Try this link. Hope it works.

FYI: I saw this same article in both the Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Kappa magazines (family members) :D this summer.

This article was also in Kappa's magazine.

PhiMu344 (and all others interested):

I would really encourage you to contact your inter/national NPC delegate or your HQ for the scoop on the new NPC recruitment resolutions. All of the NPC delegations (the 3-4 alumnae officers of your inter/national GLO who are the official delegates to National Panhellenic Conference) are being trained on all of this exciting stuff. The officers of your own GLO are the best place to start for guidance and information, and that's why they're there!

It will take a lot of work and re-learning on our campuses, but I think these resolutions are several huge steps in the right direction of recognizing that campuses are not all the same and that some of our recruiting practices are not necessarily in tune with today's college women.

Good luck to everyone - this transition will be a lot of work. And thanks for your efforts!

These changes sound very exciting - allowing each college to determine the system which will work best for them!

It was also in the Alpha Phi Quarterly

I am pretty sure that article was also in the latest edition of the Adelphean

The latest issue of The Quill (summer 2004) also has an article about the new recruitment styles.

I like how they have different styles available, but the traditional way (although tiring) will always be my favorite.

there was also an article in the aglaia.

your president, hopefully, attended the training workshop at convention and should have the packets explaining it all.

the main thing to note is that each campus does not have the ability to decide what will work and then go with that type of recruitment. there are strict guidelines describing when each type can be used. the campus panhel can review them and see which fits their campus, but ultimately, the NPC liasion to the campus and the NPC delegates from each (inter)national will be approving the type of recruitment the campus will have. at our convention, our NPC delegate said that most chapters will continue with the structured recruitment style currently in use. the main changes in this type of recruitment is that it will be no frills.

I was intrigued that the article mentioned that no frills recruitment will continue to be "a goal." Why is this so difficult to implement? Doesn't each NPC sorority on a campus have to conform to the policies set by the local chapter of Panhellenic?

Interesting article.

My alma mater has been doing something like the described "partially structured recruitment" for years - including when I rushed. Each PNM visited each sorority for 10 minutes, followed by about 8 hours (over two days) of "open houses" where she could go back to any sorority's rush room and spend as much or as little time as she liked. During round 2, a PNM could attend "informal rush" anywhere she had been invited back, again spending pretty much as long as she wanted with each group. That evening there was a more "traditional" theme party. Next night was pref, followed by bid day.

The system worked well with our campus culture (Northeast school, 5 NPC sororities), but the big danger was that PNMs would see each group for only 10 minutes, which equated to one brief conversation and a skit - if a PNM didn't click with her rusher and/or didn't like the skit, she might not go back to that sorority even though she might have fit in well there. PNMs were also told that "informal rush" was optional and whether they attended or not would not affect their chances of getting a bid - yeah, right.

I have no idea how we got the green light to proceed with such a non-traditional formal recruitment back then... but I'm glad NPC is finally acknowledging that the one-size-fits-all, you-must-have-fully-structured-formal-recruitment-even-if-there-are-only-two-small-sororities-on-campus approach isn't necessarily the best, and is allowing for some alternatives.

Old things die very very quickly. If it ain't broke don't fix it. That seemed to be the biggest hurdle on my campus and we're a small school, 4 groups, no housing, etc.

Plus, you can say no frills or try and set budgets, but then the problem of "donations" comes into play.

Then again, this is just my experience. Unfortunately on my campus, the different org. advisors tend to not work together and provide an example for the collegians, which then affects Panhel. Let's just say our recruitment roundtables were not the best meeting ever.

I still enjoy a structured recruitment. At least at my campus where it is just increasing to 5 groups, and it is deferred. Women need that push those first two nights to attend every group. Too many opinions are formed that first semester that need to be dissipated.

I'm glad that this is coming about. I don't really know how things work at schools with smaller Panhellenic systems, but it's been my understanding that a "fully structured" recruitment doesn't work for them. I've never been able to really comprehend how a recruitment system that works for a school with 1000+ girls going through at once works for a school with +/-200 (for example).
