standing in recognition
 

ok.. i remember reading on a thread somewhere that EO decided that having the deltas/alphas stand in recognition of the alums was now considered hazing.

my question is did this actually happen? and if so, why weren't individual chapters informed, because one of our advisors stood at the entrance 'hmm hmm'ing until we stood for her, no less than three times and i was a little miffed.

can anyone help?

After I technically become alum in December when I graduate, I definitely want to be around... and I would never expect for anyone to stand for me. Now I would expect a ton of hugs from everyone :p But that's just me!

When I was a New Member, we had to stand for sisters "out of respect for the pin they wear".

Now, I see things going completely the other direction, and the actives barely acknowledge an alumna's existence.

While I was taught to stand for my elders, I'm happy (as an alumna) when the actives greet me, offer me a seat and something to drink - just like they should do for ANY guest that comes into their suite. I don't think that's asking for too much, and is a decent compromise.

I think the other thread covered this one in detail. And as inappropriate as it was, she was just out of touch on this one. There are still some advisors that aren't completely current on the changes GC is making. I personally don't mind it either way, as long as the actives are respectful. Afterall, the alumnae have paid their dues too, monetarily as well as time-wise. It is simply a courteousy....like when the military salute ranking officers, or retired military. It is a custom and courteousy.

I'm a senior at Mercer University in Macon, GA and as far as I know, we have never had to stand for alumni. Don't get me wrong, I respect my elders, but I don't see what the big deal is. I think we're all on equal standing once we've become initiated, and we should respect everyone, not just those who have graduated.

As an alum I have had collegians stand in recognition for me. It might be because the alumnae association I'm active in we really support the chapter and I guess they realize they wouldn't be where they are without us. I personally think if they want to do it, who is to stop them. I feel that it is a matter of respect, just as I stand for the alums who have been members longer than I have.

i have no problem with standing out of respect for alums.
my only problem was i was confused because i thought that it had been deemed hazing, and also annoyed because in this situation it was awkward and done multiple times. especially since our advisors have said that we shouldn't do it for the advisors since we see them all the time.

When dealing with alumnae, if one of them tells you not to stand, or tells you to call her by her first name, then that supercedes any hard & fast rule.

My point was that, as long as the alumna is made to feel comfortable, all's well with the world! So many times, I've visited the (blank) chapter, climbed the stairs if the elevator's broken, and no one has offered me a seat, a drink, or even acknowledged my existance! That does NOT make an alum feel like volunteering her time very often!
