Anyone in the DC Area
I am not sure if you have heard but for anyone in the DC area, they are about to start an alumni association for anyone in the DC area. Here is the link
Fellow Alumni: First of all, thanks for your strong response for my initial announcement regarding the starting of a new Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association in the National Capital Area. Based on survey results, somewhere between 45 and 80 Brothers are interested. I specifically received emails from many of these individuals, and I appreciate all of them. Based on the survey results, here is the consensus I was able to establish regarding the date, time, and location of our organizational meeting. It will be on a Sunday, August 29th. The meeting will start at 2:00 p.m., giving everyone a chance to attend morning religious services, and will end by 5:00 p.m., enabling attendance at evening services. As for location, the consensus pointed to a location inside the Beltway, preferably to the West side. After some searching, I found a good location with the Arlington County Central Library. It is less than a quarter-mile from the Ballston Metrorail Station and it has available parking. This location, along with the date and time, will be finalized tomorrow, so if you have any questions or comments before then, please let me know as soon as possible. With a meeting date and location established, we now have two important tasks. The first is promoting the meeting to our fellow alumni. If you know of any living in the area, please let them know. If you would like, pass their email or snail mail address onto me so I can send them a reminder message and/or post card. If you are in government employment, or with a large private employer, and have the ability to inform your co-workers about events such as these, please announce the meeting. We will also make an effort to see that a public service announcement on this meeting is published in local newspapers and broadcasts on local radio and television as appropriate. The second task is much more introspective. We need to think about what we want this alumni association to be. What service projects do we want to perform? How far do we want to go in developing relationships with active chapters? Do we want to actively support extension efforts? At the same time, we need to take care of a few internal organizational matters, such as review of bylaws and selection of alumni willing to help out in putting together the first meeting. To facilitate these discussions, I set-up a Yahoo!Group that will serve as our listserv and information depository. To sign-up, visit the group's website: http://groups.yahoo.com/aponca/ The more discussion we generate prior to the meeting, the better off we will be in developing an outline that can facilitate our group's future conversations and reduce discourse. In the site's "Files" section, you will find a draft set of bylaws, which are based on bylaws I developed for another alumni association I founded in Tennessee. Again, thank you very much for all of your interest. Let me know if you have any questions or ideas. DC area chapters.
Ken's a good egg.
As for the DC chapters in the area. Georgetown (Mu Alpha) & Maryland-College Park (Epsilon Mu) have fairly good contacts with their alumni. Mu Alpha regularly has alumni from hundreds of miles away come for initiation weekend (www.mualpha.org). George Washington (Theta Chi) has been spotty (down to a few or none a couple times over the last 15 years, but came back) so any alumni of the chapter would help with Continuity. Catholic, AU & Howard are all recent (last decade) returns after long time inactive and George Mason U is about 10 years old. Randy |
