PNM w/questions
 

hey found this site through a friend from high school (thanks Katy!). i'm going through recruitment at mizzou in a few weeks and i have a couple of questions.

I'm going through recruitment as a sophomore (my dad asked me to wait until then because that's what he did when he pledged) and i'm a little nervous. Will having recs smooth things over at houses that would probably turn me away because i'm a soph? and I went through a little of COB in the winter to find I couldn't devote time through it and I'm nervous about having to go to those two houses again.

any advice? btw, i saw the what are you wearing thread and thought i'd throw in my clothing. on pref day, i'm wearing a black dress (originally strapless but after seeing the thread, i'm adding the straps to it) with 1/2 inch heels and on the day i'm visiting nine houses (don't know what this day is called) I was going to wear this sheery green top with a white cami under it and my editor pants from express. does this sound all right?

Welcome to GC! You've come to the right place.

There are a few Mizzou people on here, and they can answer your questions better than I can. Also, poke around this forum and the recruitment stories forum - there's a wealth of information. If you're so inclined, you can start your own recruitment story (we're addicts :) )

Don't worry about going back to the sororities you visited during COB. You can tell them something like "I really liked your sorority, but I decided to wait until fall so I could see all my options" - they shouldn't hold that against you.

Is that green top translucent at all? You might want to go with something a bit more conservative. Also, be sure you have comfortable shoes! Looks like you're set for pref, but be sure you have some nice comfortable shoes for the rest of rush.

Edited to add: I should mention that I attended a school in the Northeast where rush was somewhat laid back and class standing wasn't really an issue. Things may be different at Mizzou.

And also take a look at the booklet that you received after they got your registration. On the web site this is what they say about clothes for the 9-party day (skits and some house tours):

"Dress for the day is slightly dressier than shorts -- a sundress, skirt or capri outfit is perfect, and . . . wear comfortable shoes." So IF what you're thinking of seems to fit with that general description, it should be all right. IF you decide to go with a sundress or skirt outfit, you may want to keep in mind that you'll probably be sitting during part of the parties, so the dress or skirt ought to allow for comfortable sitting and getting up (not too short, in other words).

Women currently in college or recent alums will be better than I am at advising whether what you described is along the lines of what the Mizzou Panhellenic web site recommends.

Going through as a sophomore is different at different schools, so hopefully some of the people from your school will help you with that, but I wanted to tell you that I joined as a sophomore and it was a great decision for me.

My recruitment experience was slightly different from first years because I knew many of the ladies and had seen most of them around campus. If you have friends in sororities, be sure to know what their rules are...for example, I had just finished being an orientation leader with several of the ladies and we had become very good friends...when I left their houses, I wanted to hug them, but they are not allowed to touch potential members.

Anyway, it was a wonderful but different experience. I could go on forever, but I won't. Feel free to pm me if you want to talkmore about general concerns about joining as a sophomore. (The pledging experience feels different too.)

i second the comment about the sophomore policy being different at every school, but regardless of that, chapters DO take at last some sophomores everywhere or else they'd be SOL and miss out on half of the good recruits. that said, if it comes up in conversation, i would emphasize the great parts of you being older: you're already involved on campus, you know that you can totally commit yourself to the chapter/greek life and you know you're way around the place...you probably have more connections to people and classes that sisters know than any other freshman!
