Kentucky Fraternities use Sorority House for Rush
 

At the University of Kentucky, a few of the fraternity chapters and colonies (chapters who's house is under repair/construction, have a dorm floor, or currently waiting for their house to be built), hold fall rush at UK sorority houses.

Any other campuses do this? What are y'all's feeling on this?

The chapters that have done this, and or are planning to do so this fall are as follows. (Help me out all you UK folk.)

When I was a chapter advisor at Bowling Green in the late 80s, we held rush in a fraterntiy house one fall (we did not have a house at that time) and when we DID have an on-campus house, allowed a fraternity who was new to campus and did not have a house to hold their rush in our house. It was great for chapter relations and caused only slight inconvenience to the host group (mainly because they had to exit/enter through the back door while parties were in progress).

We had very specific agreements in writing that specified what could be on the walls, who was responsible for damages and clean up as well as the times that the 'visiting' group could be in the house or which bathrooms they could use. When the frat used the Pi Phi house, we had a strict "no alcohol" policy both during, before and after parties (not all fraternity rush was dry at that time). Our houses were university property so it was common practice. I'm not as familiar with houses being used that are owned by House Corp.

I believe that the Pi Beta Phi and Delta Gamma houses are each owned by their housing corporation. The other houses are owned by the University.

And UK's fraternity rush is dry as well.

At Stanford all unhoused fraternities "borrow" houses for Rush. Fraternities hold their Rush parties at their own houses or at general self-operated co-ed houses (used to be fraternity/sorority houses but when the GLO lost its charter, the university bought the house for general student housing - if a chapter got its charter back, it didn't get its house back - every chapter that has lost its house has never gotten the original house back, even if they did get housing again)

All houses at Bowling Green are owned by the university and are actually right on campus. This is good for a number of reasons, but for others such as having parties it really sux too.

When I was at Georgia Southern the sororities without houses would borrow fraternity houses and vice versa. I remember one house in particular we borrowed... You wouldn't believe the cleaning we had to do to get that house ready :rolleyes:

Wanted to clarify a few things about the chapters:

Delta Sigma Phi actually has an "unofficial" house off campus.......it looks like a haunted house actually but that's a separate story ;) heheh

Kappa Alpha Order's house was torn down........was a sad day :( It looks weird too cuz now there is an empty lot in that row and it looks tacky. I hope they rebuild. {Though who knows where.....apparently the remaining houses in that block: Pi Kappa Alpha, Lambda Chi Alpha, FarmHouse, Phi Sigma Kappa, and Kappa Sigma are supposed to be torn down too. Rumor has it the reason is to "enhance the park like atmosphere of the William T. Young Library." Sigma Phi Epsilon has already seen this fate and a parking lot has been paved over their lot (A new house was rebuilt for them in a new location however, same as with Sigma Chi house). Alpha Tau Omega which is next door to the newly paved lot is supposed to suffer the same fate as well, as Alpha Gamma Rho.)

Delta Tau Delta's house is currently under a multi-million dollar renovation. They have a big house off campus.

Phi Delta Theta has no house because they just came there like a year or two ago (I've seen some of these guys walking around that campus and out and about..........very hot guys..........if only I was younger.........)

I believe Pi Kappa Phi has a dorm floor (or they did).

Didnt mean for this to be as long but I wanted to give the background info. for fraternity PNM's.

Yeah the "six pack" is going to go. They have been there since before my father was in a frat there.


As to rushing out of another house... AGD at GC had to do it for two years. The first year was out of the lamb house and Pike house... Lamb house was fine... no problems. The Pike house was where we did formal rush and it wasn't pretty. The Pike's weren't very curtous and did somethings that they had to applogize for.

The next year, we avoided houses all together and "rushed" out of the old library space. After that we moved to our space and all was good!

Pi Kappa Phi is still currently in the dorms...If i am not mistaking...Kappa Sig is getting the old Sigma Kappa house in sorority circle.

Doesn't Kappa Alpha have an "unofficial" house as well? A few high school buddies are KAs so I hear a lot about them. My understanding is that their housing corporation has been quite active and they are looking to buy or rent something soon.

I had also heard that Phi Delta Theta had one as well. But could easily be wrong regarding the Phi Delts. ;)

I thought the Alpha Tau Omega house was new. The old one was near the old Sigma Phi Epsilon house on Clifton Circle, the present site of the Young Library. If so, I would be surprised if it was to be torn down. Then again, this is UK. :p

My freshman roommate at UK is a Delt and he gives me all kinds of grief about the renovation. I heard that it will be one of the largest Greek houses in the whole South. I'm so thrilled for 'em. :rolleyes:

As for the six-pack, my understanding is that they are to be torn down as well and rebuilt in the new Greek Park. The square block created by Rose Lane, Rose Street, Euclid Avenue and Woodland Avenue. Similar to the new Sigma Chi and Sigma Phi Epsilon houses. Same for Alpha Gamma Rho. However, I've also heard that UK may rebuild one or two new houses at the old six-pack site. Depends if, and how quick, UK can buy the land in the proposed Greek Park area.

I've also heard that some chapters might buy near or in the historical area near the Phi Kappa Tau house. More toward downtown Lexington.

If Kappa Sigma was to move into the Sigma Kappa, they wouldn't have to do much alterations. Just switch the letters. :D

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Kappa Sig did get to move into Columbia Terrace. I think the UK administration is looking at chapters that have the stability and alumni (read financial) support first. Also based on seniority and Kappa Sigma is one of UK's oldest chapters. (1901)

And how does that work? I'm guessing that they use the lounge area as a chapter room and that rooms on the floor go to the chapter. But do they have the whole floor? And is it a secure floor or could anyone take the elevator (stairs) to the floor and get off?

And what happens if they can not fill all the dorm rooms? I would guess they would have to either fill them with non chapter members or reimburse UK.

The one unhoused chapter at Central OK uses the campus commons for their Rush parties. And they do very well every year.

Sigma Kappa is moving into the old AZD house and Phi Delta Theta is moving into the old Sigma Kappa. The Phi Delts living in the Sigma Kappa house is a temporary situation until we get a new sorority on our campus.

As for the Pi Kapps. Their floor is locked you can't get off the elevator onto the 9th floor. You have to get onto the floor from the stairs by swiping your student id. They hold their chapter meetings elsewhere .. not on the floor.
