Report from Chi Omega Convention 2004

Big news....

We have a new S.H.

Jean Mermoud Mrasek, S.H. (National President)

Jean was initiated at Epsilon Gamma Chapter, The University of Tulsa, where she served as President and Recruitment Chairman. Her honors included membership in Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) as well as Top Ten Senior recipient. She earned a B.A. degree in Advertising/Public Relations and M.A. degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Jean worked for the University of Tulsa in the positions of Admission Counselor, Assistant Dean of Admission, and Senior Admission Representative. Additionally, she worked in the Tulsa area as an Organizational Development Consultant.

Immediately after college, Jean traveled for Chi Omega as a National Representative. She has continued to serve Chi Omega on the national level in a number of capacities, including Firesides/Convention staff and Chi Omega's Delegation to NPC. As Chi Omega's First Alternate Delegate to NPC, Jean held leadership positions as Chairman of the NPC Unanimous Review Committee, NPC Area Advisor Coordinator for Mid-America, and Chairman of the NPC Extension Committee. She has made numerous consulting visits to collegiate Panhellenics in her region of responsibilities. On the local level, Jean served as chapter advisor to Epsilon Gamma. She has belonged to the Tulsa Alumnae chapter and is currently a member of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter. Jean has been active in the Junior League in both cities.

In Southlake, Texas, where she and her family reside, Jean is an active member of the Episcopal Church and involved with the PTO at her children's schools. Jean and her husband, Michael Mrasek, have three children, Allison, Nicholas and Elizabeth.

Make-a-Wish Granted

One of the highlights of Convention was being able to participate in the granting of a wish for six-year-old Shelby. The Iota Chapter (Univ. of Texas - Austin) raised the money to make her wish a reality. Shelby wants to be a movie star! With the help of San Antonio News Channel 9 anchor, Alisa Armijo (Theta Zeta Chapter, Univ. of Eastern New Mexico), Shelby starred in a public service announcement for Make-a-Wish.

Following dinner the first night of Convention, we held a premiere for Shelby's commercial. Complete with a red carpet, spotlights, balloons & bubbles...Shelby took the stage to view, for the first time, her commercial. She was then showered with gifts & escorted to the lobby where she signed autographs.

It was indeed a special night for Shelby, her family and all Chi Omegas present. There wasn't a dry eye in the place when Shelby said, "Thank you, Chi Omegas!"

I'll add a picture of Shelby when it's available. For now, here's Alisa who served as M.C. for the event.

I am so glad Make-A-Wish is now our national philanthropy. It is such a great org.
Are all of the members on the Governing Council new this year? I didn't recognize the names.

National Board

Actually the only new member of the National Board is Letitia Fulkerson (Zeta Alpha) - SKA... she served as 2nd and 1st alternate to the NPC delegate for the past few years. Shelley Potter was on the board a few years ago, and the rest are all repeats. Our new SH used to be SKA.
I heard convention was a blast!

My favorite sessions were the keynote address by Dr. Gordon Gee, Chancellor of Vanderbilt Univ. and the "Visions to Values" workshop by Jan Blackwell, National Archivist.

Dr. Gee won the crowd when he announced, "I dated a Chi Omega in college........she dumped me.........which further illustrates your high standards!"

We had two model initiates: Dabbs Anderson, Tau Chapter (Ole Miss) and Frannie Wessberry, Chi Delta Chapter (Millsaps College). They are first cousins, daughters of Chi Omegas & grandaughters of former National President, Roselyn Dabbs. It was a beautiful ceremony.

Welcome, purkychio!

Yes, Letitia has been involved for many years -- she was a Chapter Visitor (now called National Consultant) 1983-85 and then worked in the Executive Office from 1985-89. She now owns her own State Farm business and lives in Cincinnati, OH.

Small world. I was crashing your boards and lo and behold I know your new national president, Jean Mrasek! Our daughters went to the same elementary school when she lived in Tulsa. She is one sharp gal! Very organized and involved. Everything she touches turns to gold. Invites to her daughter's birthday party were coveted because she threw such spectacularly creative events. You Chi Omegas are in good hands. Pardon the small hijack.

And who says the "party with frills" doesn't still exist?!?! :p

Thanks for the kind post, pinkflamingo & welcome to the Jean Mrasek Fan Club!
