America's Teams

You see their fans in almost any city...and I don't mean your occasional fan, I mean there's a good population of them.

NFL: Raiders
Baseball: Yankees
NBA: Lakers
Hockey: Red Wings
Soccer: Man United
College Basketball: Duke
College Football: USC

Any disagree or got another one?

PrincessPhiSig 07-05-2004 10:14 PM

I disagree with your College Basketball choice. Now, my team of choice is Duke, but there are tons of people sporting Carolina stuff and most sports stores will have Carolina hats, shirts, and other merchandise available in every color of the rainbow. I personally abhor Carolina but I see their "fans" everywhere.

Duke fans are the best though! :)

DeltaSigStan 07-05-2004 10:16 PM

I saw a lot of UNC stuff in High School, but now I see a lot of Duke stuff in college...

But, ok..

They are also some of the most hated teams depending on who you speak to.
Baseball you also have a high number of cubs and red sox fans.

Football has alot of Cowboy fans out there.

Basketball also has the spurs, knicks and celtics

Hockey has toronto.

College baseketball has kentucky

College football Miami or FSU.

All the above including your list are some of the most popular teams in sports.

Man U over Real Madrid? Personally I dont think that America has a favorite soccer team yet. With Adu on DC United though I think thats the most popular MLS choice.

I dont agree with the Raiders either, Id say Cowboys. I live 20 minutes from the Coliseum and I know lots of people who hate the Raiders.

College Football Id say Nebraska or Ohio State. Yeah Nebraska is only popular because of the Red N and the gang affiliation, but USC for sure isnt America's team...

I am a Raiders fan, but I dont agree that they're americas team..they're americas most hated team, not their team though....This is my list:

NFL: Cowboys
MLB: Yankees
NBA: Lakers
NHL: Red Wings

Soccer isnt an american sport, sorry, nobody really knows about it. The College teams, ehh, its a close one there...I gotta say either UCLA, Duke, UNC on that one....UCLA due to its history and wooden, not as of recent....College football is kinda up in the air i gotta say...

DeltaSigStan 07-05-2004 10:56 PM

The fan base in America (It's bigger than you think buddy) follows the world game very well, so amongst those fans, I'd say Man United.

Real Madrid maybe, but I also know a lot of Barcelona fans. There may be a lot of Arsenal fans though....

MLS teams don't count...like I said, most American soccer fans pay more attention to Europe and South America.

I've just heard the stories of the Raider Nation popping up at many road games, and I don't mean a small number of fans. Of course, that may be cause I'm in San Diego....

Ever since the Cowboys strated to suck with Chan Gailey and Dave Campo etc, I sawe a lot of their fan base drop off, maybe the Tuna will change that.

Everybody outside of New York hates the Yankees. The Cubs get my vote as "America's team" also. I can almost see the Lakers, but I think you could've said the same thing about the Bulls a few years ago when they won all the time -- basically with basketball, America's team is whoever is kicking ass at the moment.

I don't think that there's any such thing as "America's team" for any other sports. College sports are really a regional thing -- growing up in the Chicago area, I never heard of anyone who cared about Duke or USC -- okay, maybe Duke, but I hate them so it doesn't count, lol.

When I think of America's Team for college football, Notre Dame is the school that always comes to mind.

It seems like lots of people are Irish fans even though they aren't in any way affiliated with the school.

Both my alma mater and that of my husband play Notre Dame in football every year and, based on the fans in the stands, I find it difficult to believe that those folks are ND alumni!

Have a take. Don't suck. I'm OUT...biotch

Awwk? Was that Jim Rome's Parrot?

NC State's Women's team? Maybe they've provided some of the best women's soccer players ever, but you can't tell me the average American soccer fan them follows them on a regular basis the way they would a Euro team (and that's a small number of soccer fans who actually keep up with ANY team, most soccer fans here would rather play it than watch it).

Cal Poly Pomona? That's like celebrating winning the Arena Bowl.

I'll give the nod to Notre Dame though.

Thank you for that Rome E-mail you posted. Maybe you can send it in tommorow and win a free tub of Sunflower seeds?

I'd say Notre Dame too. And, not being biased here, Michigan as a 2nd. When I got to games I can't believe the license plates I see. Everywhere I've been, I see Michigan paraphanelia. Maybe differently elsewhere, but I notice it alot.

Kevin 07-06-2004 12:24 AM

College football is kind of a regional team. Stan, you being from Cali, you're obviously going to say USC:D

Down in Oklahoma, we might have to just agree to disagree on that ;)

And folks up in the midwest will tell you Michigan or ND. That's not the case (although, you might be able to make a case for ND).

Nebraska had a good following until recently when it started to stink it up. Maybe with Callahan in a few years, they'll be up there again. But it won't be immediately.

As for the rest of those things, here in Oklahoma, we don't really care about anything but our NCAA football :D

AlphaFrog 07-06-2004 12:28 AM

Baseball is definatly the Cubs...besides last season, when's the last time they were worth a crap and they still had loyal fans everywhere...it's easy for "America's Team" to be whoever's winning at the time, but the Cubs are time-tested, underdog favorites.

DeltaSigStan 07-06-2004 12:33 AM

I'm actually a UCLA fan since we have a chapter there and not SC.
