Another Reasons To Stop Using IE

Abandon Explorer, pros advise

NEW YORK - Last week was a bad week for many users of Microsoft Corp.'s nearly ubiquitous Internet Explorer browser.

A pair of virus attacks exploiting its vulnerabilities led security experts to recommend that Web surfers consider such alternatives as Mozilla and Opera.

Continuing to use Internet Explorer is ``like playing the lottery,'' said Johannes B. Ullrich, chief technology officer of the nonprofit SANS Internet Security Center.

The respected research center is among security groups recommending other browsers as long as a key vulnerability in IE remains unfixed, leaving it capable of running malicious code that's been hidden at a number of popular Web sites.

Microsoft issued software Friday that, while not fixing the vulnerability entirely, disables a hacker's ability to deliver malicious code with it. SANS announced no immediate change to its recommendation.

I switched to firefox. Working great.

I don't have near the browser issues I had before. When there was that serious browser war between Netscape and IE, IE really turned out a good product. But, like with anything else, when someone has a monopoly, they tend to become lazy.

These new alternative browsers are so much better.

Switched to firefox not too long ago...not sure why I didn't earlier.

How long does this take to download?

I don't think it took more than a minute or two on my connection.

You can get firefox here.

youd think Microsoft would make Internet Explorer incapable of downloading other browsers :D

EDIT: Firefox is tight

I just wish that Netscape hadn't sold out to AOL. They had a kickass broswer before IE 5.0 came out (which was much faster).

Back when MS had to compete and create a decent product.

I'd expect if they keep losing market share to these other free browsers, they'll come out with a kickass IE 7.0.

BTW... That Active X Control stuff is scary. Someone could write an Active X program designed to erase your hard drive (fairly easily from what I understand) and your computer would just execute it.

I'm staying away from IE for awhile.

I agree w/ ktsnake - I preferred Netscape over IE before IE 5.0 came out. Recently I've been pretty fed up with IE.

I've downloaded and played around with both Firefox and Opera. So far I think I prefer Firefox (can seem to get more pages. Gmail is not supported on Opera but it is on Firefox). Supposedly, IE is eventually going to have tabs as well as one of its new features (which is one of the things I prefer about Opera & Firefox), but I don't know if that's being released w/ the SP2 updates in a few months or if it will be released on its own or what.

Opera seems to be a hair slower than IE and Firefox, but I like how it shows the time it takes to open the page in the bottom status bar.

Edited b/c I can't type today.

"Do flat chested women have difficulty breast feeding?"

Not necessarily.

(Mrs. DA was a lactation consultant and on the international board of directors for La Leche Leage and has dealt with this alot)

Now, back to your original thread...
