Alpha, Beta, & Gamma Chapters

I may have missed this during new member meetings b/c I COB'd so late but why are our original three chapters now permanently dormant? Are there even any sororities at Colby college anymore?

Colby College does not permit any social Greek organizations. You can read the article here, I pulled the quote below:

Quote:

The College prohibits social fraternities and sororities. Students who pledge, who invite pledging, who haze, or who perpetuate any fraternity or sorority will be suspended for at least one year and may be subject to additional penalties that could include expulsion.

This decision was made in 1984, but I can't find any articles that explain why...?

How weird is that. You would think that they would be proud to be the birthplace of an awesome organization like Sigma Kappa. Oh Well. Their loss. But it wouldn't be right to try to re-establish those chapters somewhere else b/c they were started at Colby not anywhere else.

Actually, I'm not sure you can recharter named chapters at new campuses (as in, rechartering Alpha chapter at Boise State, or something, whatever). I could be wrong, though.

The answer as to why Beta and Gamma chapters are non-existant is that they merged with Alpha early on. All three were at Colby. If I post more it might go into ritual talk, so ask someone in your chapter for more info. Or, I can PM you, just let me know.

I'd love to know more about it. Finding out more of our history that's not in the books is a huge drawback to having rushed so late. However, any info you can give me is greatly appreciated! PM me!

i'm pretty sure you are not able to re-assign a charter to another school. there are a few cincinnati alumnae who would like to take the alpha iota chapter from miami u (obviously where i was, duh the name) and re-assign it to u of cincy. i'm not all that game for it, but hey. i just can't see myself going back to my chapter if it's at another school. it's just crazy. but whatever.
