American University

Anyone attend?

What is the school and the surrounding area like?

They have a good join J.D./M.A. program..so any info would help (other than what I've already read from their website and booklet).

LOL @ Rudey

Opi, I attended American for grad school. I dropped out.

I REALLY like the main campus. The atmosphere is really friendly. For a smedium sized school, they have good facilities. It is located in one of the safest and most affluent neighborhoods in DC. The people are down to earth.

It is easily accessible to the metro, via a shuttle bus. Well, the main campus is. The law school is probably half a mile off campus, and it has a shuttle as well, from what I know.

I did NOT like my program. After my advisor retired, it was all downhill. Grants were virtually nonexistent for me. The administration was pretty inept at paying attention to my needs.

On the other hand, the financial aid department was always in my corner and couldn't understand why my department was so non-cooperative.

Unfortunately, I don't personally know anyone who went to American for law school. It doesn't jump out at me as being as well known as other local schools, but if they are giving you grants and scholarships, go for it.

^ Thanks sensuret.

Well, I will have to see about the grants and Financial aid part. If its not easily accessible then that may or may not cause problems down the line. Thnx for the look out!

I haven't heard too much about their law schools here..but I was interested in a specific program, and not really the popularity of the school.

Is D.C. an expensive place to live....like if I decided to live off-campus?

Senusret I 06-30-2004 12:57 PM

Yes, DC is expensive.

But, there are always inexpensive pockets.

If/when you visit, pick up the Washington Post and the Washington City Paper to get an idea of the rental prices.

jhujenn 06-30-2004 12:59 PM

Yes. Especially in DC proper.

_Opi_ 06-30-2004 01:01 PM

Sensuret,

I will keep that in mind.

My cousin graduated from American(1993 or so) and she loved it. Another cousin is the Director of Multicultural Affairs at AU, so I have been on the campus several times. It is a very nice school.
