Question for Phi Mu's
 

Hello my fellow sisters, I have a question for y'all :)

"Okay this might sound like a dumb question but I'm kind of curious

So I decided to check out the Phi Mu official website, just to learn more about the organization. I then looked at their list of collegiate chapters and was surprised to "learn" that they only have 48 (at least according to the website) collegiate chapters.

I have to say I'm completely surprised by this number. I really thought since Phi Mu is only a year (not even that) younger than us that they would have close to as many collegiate chapters that we have (I counted, 131). Does anyone know why they don't have as many chapters (as I thought they would)? What about expansion, anyone know about that? I would personally love to see a Phi Mu here in Arizona somewhere (I guess I'm biased towards our "sister" sorority. :) )"

I posted this question on the ADPi forum and a sister mentioned that when you search by state more chapters come up but we had a question what is the difference between Collegiate Chapters and Chapter Associations?

We currently have 125 active collegiate chapters.

Chapter Associations are organization so all sisters ever initiated by a particular chapter. Sort of an alum group for a collegiate chapter. Say Delta Psi Chapter Association is only for the 200+ women initiated Delta Psi Chapter. This is different from an alum chapter which is for all Phi Mu alumnae in an area no matter the collegiate chapter they were initiated into.l

ANOTHER question
 

I figure this can just be in this thread as well, but.....
My alma mater (Knox College) has only 2 sororities: Tri Delta and PiPhi...as opposed to 4 fraternities (used to be 5, Phi Delt was just kicked off). There has been a lot of talk about bringing in a 3rd Nat'l sorority to campus.
Here's my question:
Phi Mu HAD a chapter at Knox up until around 1989/1990. Being on panhellenic council, I asked if we could consider Phi Mu since they have a history with the campus and (more importantly) alumni. My advisor said they would not be considered because they were not strong Nationally. Is this true?
If this is not true and your nationals could fully support bringing Phi Mu back to the Knox campus, please PM me so that I might give you the contact info for our greek advisor. I'd love to see Knox bring back a sorority that already has a history there, and since Phi Mu was the last to leave, I feel this warrants some investigation. Phi Mu should be considered.

PS: bringing a 3rd sorority on campus will be a few years coming (3 or so) both Tri Delta and PiPhi need to maintain steady numbers (around 50 girls) for a couple years before this is made a reality.

I just want to say this was a very rude thing for your Greek advisor to say, and particularly to say to a student. Almost all sororities are stronger in some areas of the country than others - it doesn't make them "not strong nationally" just because of that. Then again sometimes Greek advisors have their own prejudices that they should really keep to themselves.

Sorry to barge and Maggie, I'm not angry at you - I know you're just the messenger - I just hate to see people whose job it should be to support and promote ALL Greeks indulging in negative behavior.

I emailed my advisor with some information about Phi Mu nationals that one of your sisters graciously provided me with. I know you're not angry at me :) I'm disappointed in myself for believing him because I hadnt looked into it...no worries though, we're lucky to have this guy as Knox's greek advisor because he's an active advocate for the greek system, not a mere participant. He was probably going off outdated info or something HE had heard and had not researched it much. We once had 5 sororities at Knox: Delta Zeta, PiPhi, Tri Delta, Alpha Xi Delta, and Phi Mu...I dont think it's such a tall order to request that ONE of those chapters be brought back!!! I'm pushing for PM because they lasted the longest out of the three that are no longer extant on the Knox campus...and let's face it, it's NOT FAIR for the guys to have 4 choices and the girls only have TWO in terms of social greek organizations....*sigh*

Phi Mu is actually VERY strong nationally. (Obviously -- otherwise we wouldn't have been at your college in the first place!) If you need verification... check with the 140,000 women we have scattered across the country, the continent, the nation!

While it is certainly true that Phi Mu has a strong southern tradition, we have many, many, thriving chapters in the northermost states as well.

as I'm sure you already know, NPC on your campus has to decide to expand, then invite several groups to "interview". Some colleges WANT groups that've already been on campus; some colleges feel like a group that's left campus has "had their chance."

Just to stick my $.02 in here... Knox college holds the Alpha Chapter (dormant) for Alpha Xi Delta, it having been transfered there in the 1930s when Lombard merged with Knox. Every Alpha Xi Delta would be thrilled and supportive if our Alpha chapter were to be re-installed.

ETA: To the ladies of Phi Mu, we mean no disrespect. I think we just get a little (okay, REALLY) excited when we think of the possibility of getting Alpha chapter back.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an effort already @ Knox...

Knox, up until recently, has had some trouble with numbers in its greek system, especially the sororities. And coupled with Phi Delt having just been shut down this Spring, the road is a little ragged for the greeks at the moment. However, the majority of the greeks in the system are highly accomplished (as they are most places :) ) and the effort needs to now be made for a 3rd sorority. It's just ridiculous that we only have two seeing as how it's impossible for all the women wanting to go greek at Knox to feel comfortable at either chapter...

At the moment, there is no public discussion about the addition of a 3rd sorority to the Knox campus, according to the Greek Advisor. IF I hear anything further, I will let you ladies know....apparently I wasnt supposed to say anything about the possibility in the first place :(

No worries, I was simply unaware of the confidential nature of this subject.....which is understandable since everyone was talking about it and a petition was signed by 500 Knox students about it....:p doesnt sound too confidential to me!
