Song Fest & Skits
Hey ladies!
Just wondering if we could all share some ideas for song fest (do all of you do song fest?) or for skits! We've never done skits for rush at the University of Utah, but Greek Council is making some changes which i'm pretty sure includes skits so any ideas would help! For song fest this year (where every organization is given a theme and change words in songs, dance and compete for the entire univeristy) We did kind of a tv program thing where girls up at the front of the stage where flipping through the channels on a TV and the rest of us would sing and dance to the changed to words of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, FRIENDS, Joyful Joyful in the movie Sister Act, and Beyonce's Uh Oh song...it was awesome! pi phi love, ...colleen* |
We don't have a Song Fest, but we do have Geneva Stunts (in the Fall) and Spring Sing (which is you guessed it in the Spring!). For both of those we're paired with a Fraternity or one of the housing units and we're given a list of songs to choose from. It's a HUGE deal here at Butler and it keeps us really busy with lots of rehearsals. Each group tries to incorporate Butler and the YMCA (the group which sponsors this) into the skits and the show is amazing to watch.

We did a Songfest at the University of Toledo that was a song-dance competition and the biggest event of the spring. Until I moved to Texas, I went every year to support the chapter (and a lot of UT alums did the same). As an undergrad, we could decide our own theme/ songs but the organizers now decide the overall theme (usually something pretty broad) and while you pick songs, there can't be repetition so there is an organized system to "pick" your songs. I know that Ohio State and Miami (Ohio) do a version that is a little different (must be an Ohio thing) but is more song-and-dance Broadway style than a skit.

Well, we don't have a song fest, but we do have a Mock Rock at the end of Derby Days in the fall, and something called "all-house sing" during Greek Week.
For the DD Mock Rock, all the sororities basically create elaborate dance routines. Just about everyone in the house is involved, along with the houses three Derby Days "coaches". We usually get very elaborate with the 'technical' aspect of our Mock Rock. Last fall, we used a Missy Elliot song, and the year before, we used a portion of a Michael Jackson concert. In my opinion, they both turned out pretty well, although we didn't 'win' either year. :) For GW "all-house sing", all the sororities take a song (or several songs) and change the words to involve their house and Greek Week.... Since I've been there, we've done Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Pi Phis Just Wanna Have Fun) Sugar Pie Honey Bunch (Sugar Pi Beta Phi) and Hey Ya. We do this in the gym and it's not nearly as elaborate as Mock Rock. Ah, Recruitment skits.... For years and years, our chapter did "Grease", but the year I went through recruitment was the last year we used it. Since then, we've been doing a skit we call "Pi Phi Scrapbook", but that is getting out of hand. Our recruitment chair is currently looking for a new skit.... We're thinking about a "Wizard of Oz" thing, I believe. |
At W&L, we have something called LipSync, but you don't have to change the words of the song, you just have to come with original costumes and dance moves and be able to lip synch to the songs as you preform. We've done all kinds of things--we won this year, which was really exciting. It was a Madonna act. Our other acts last year were an 80s act and a early 90s rap act. Other things I've seen chapters do that were really good were classic Michael Jackson, all different musicals, Disney songs.... Chi-O won the year before us and they did a tune from Moulin Rouge.
