VW cars

so i am looking to get a new car!! yea!! or nay?? there are so many to choose from!! my parents are pushing a toyota corolla which they drive and my bitchy-stupid-not-my-best-friend-anymore drives one (hence reason#1 not to get one), i like honda civics but everyone drives those and my best friend is pushing a VW golf. i think they are cute and look fun to drive. VW seems to offer 923048239074925 more standard features than toyota and honda. and better priced for what you get.

so, my question is...

anyone own a VW? which model?
any problems with customer service or maintance?
would you get another VW?
any other car advice you wanna give me?

:)

The last issue of Consumer Reports that really discussed cars was kind of iffy about European car quality. It may be that Euro car quality hasn't actually declined, but it is being surpassed by companies like GM.

I'm pretty partial to my Honda, but it's still just a little over a year old. I say, if you have a choice, get what you like.

My sister has a 2001 Jetta and LOVES it. She likes it better than any car she's ever had and is in no hurry to get rid of it. She's had very few problems with it and says the dealership is great. I also know a family who ONLY drives VWs and has since the 80s. They love them :)

I've had 1 VW (1992 Cabrio convertable) and my boyfriend had a Golf. I also know about a dozen or so people that own them and hate them. I've also worked for VW so keep that in mind when I say this....

DO NOT GET A VW!

There are many more better/more reliable cars out there than a VW, especially the golf. They tend to have major problems early on...that also continue throughout the life of the car.

Honda, Toyota, Acura, Subaru and Mitsubishi all make some great cars. I'd just stay away from VW.

my sister is in love with her '03 Jetta. from what i hear, VW makes great cars

i 've always heard that Mitsubishi doesnt make many long lasting cars.....always has maintenance problems

I won't deny the fact that VW makes some really great cars. But it's pick and choose which one you get. Either you get one that has A LOT of problems, or (if you're one of the lucky few) you get one that will last several lifetimes. The biggest thing about VW's is, if you're going to buy one, check the VIN to see if it was made in Germany or the US. If possible, get one that was made in Germany - just a little trick I learned when I worked for a VW dealership. ;)

Hubby owns a VW Golf. We dont drive it much. It sits in the garage. He has it pimped out as he likes to call it and we have gotten in trouble before by the law in college for racing and the NAS so we keep it in the garage and tinker with it I guess.

VW I see them all over the roads here in Ohio. More people seem to buy the Jetta if they are a 16-30 crowd. Ive seen older people with them too. The Golf is also a nice car to own.

It just depends on what you want. A lot of cars in the college age that people like and I know I like are the Golf, Jetta, Eclipse, Cougar, Celica, Civic, Tibouron.
If you sort of like the Civic, Id check out all of these other cars. They are all about the same size and the prices vary. They can all look pretty sweet too.

Do your research and definitely read the consumer reports. Sites to check out:

Before you buy know how much the dealership paid, etc...so you don't get screwed....and be careful in the finance office.;)

My mother had a Jetta and now has a Passat. I personally don't like Jettas. I think they are made for people who are 5'2 and under. Especially if you are sitting in the back seat. The Passat has a lot more room and has a smoother ride in my opinion.

I am also looking to purchase a car and like Civics.

I have a friend that had a 2001 Jetta. It had so many problems that she got it exchanged under Lemon law. The dealership gave her some line about how every car companu has a vehicle every now and then that has terminal issues. They replaced it with a 2003 Jetta. About 2 months ago the dealership bought it back from her because it was in the shop more then she had it.
On the other side I had a co-worker that loved his. He never had a problem.
I agree with ztabchbum, they are either really good or really bad.

I have a Jetta and love it. Honestly, before this thread I've never known anyone who didn't love VW. I've had a bunch, and they are always great and last a long time. I've used 2 dealerships though, and they both suck. Like really really bad, saying we need new brakes when they are 10% gone. And totally overcharging us. So be careful about that if you do get one.

I friend used to have an '89 Jetta. While she was still driving it a couple of years ago it had always been a really bad car. It had nothing but problems.
It's turned out that '89 was a bad year for the Jetta and most Jettas of that year had major mechanical problems. She was somewhat lucky that she could continue driving it, he brother is really good with cars and was able to fix whatever problem of the day was.
It makes me wonder if other years have similar major mechanical problems

I have a passat and love it.. its a 2001 and a ball to drive.. The 1.8T is the turbo motor and is fun to drive, however you'll have to get used to having a turbo motor and it kicking in.. heres a few pics of mine.. :D :p

yea it's alittle fixed up...
