Why would it make a difference, other than curiosity, what the bid matching process involves?

I read the article. WOW! I'm taking it to Physics with me Tuesday night. I understand the principle when it is out into words, but I think I need help when the system is analyzed mathematically. I guess the bottom line is, the system works.
