I need help to create a resume with the application
I want to keep it on one page. So, I have put down the schools (2 high schools and the college), community service, activities, and my awards that I have won. The problem is that I've been involved in so many activites and service work and awards (mainly from high school) that I can't keep it on one page. I never had a job in my life. What should I do?

Start by removing the high school. That should free up some space. Also, is it necessary to list the awards from high school? I was under the impression you were never to put anything prior to college on your resume (unless, of course, you were valedictorian). However, if you are an incoming freshman and have no prior college experience, then I guess it would be okay.
If you don't want to cut any info, try manipulating the page setup. Use a smaller font - make the margins .5 instead of 1.0. Stuff like that. |
Another thing to do is change the spacing between items. So instead of single space, you can have 3/4 space.
Also, try bulleting things that are not as important so you won't have to describe them to. (It's kind of hard to offer suggestions without seeing the hard copy. But I agree with AXiD about manipulating the margins--it usually works wonders. Also try making the font 11.5 instead of 12.) |

if you are designing a resume for job applications, lose the h.s stuff. use only the college. now, if you are designing the resume for sorority recruitment purposes, then definantly use the h.s stuff. there are several good books out on resume writing-check out your local bookstore or public library. best of luck!

When we looked at resumes, we were more interested in activities and awards and less interested in work experience. In fact, too much work experience, and we started to think maybe she couldn't really afford to join or wouldn't have the time.

i have never heard of resume's beign included with a sorority recruitment application, nor have I heard them being included with a sorority letter of reference.
We've only required them when one of our members is applying for a Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation Scholarship to include with the scholarship application. Is this some new thing? Or has it always existed on some campuses? |
from what i have known, there is a part on the recruitment application that says use an extra sheet of paper if you have a long list of activities and accomplishments.
with that said, if you know that you have a lot of activities to list, it might look better to put it all on one sheet (a.k.a. resume). i do not think it is a requirement. it is just something that looks good and shows your seriousness in being a good pnm. |
The resume is not required, but suggestful. The smaller font and the margin spacing really helped. Thanks.
