Couple Celebrates 80 YEARS as Husband and Wife

What a blessing. . .

Couple Celebrates 80th Wedding Anniversary

POSTED: 7:27 am EDT June 15, 2004

LENOX, Iowa -- A couple in the southwest Iowa town of Lenox have been married longer than many people live.

Dr. E. R. Pennebaker and Bessie Pennebaker celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary Monday. They were married June 14, 1924. He is 101 and she's 96.

Dr. Pennebaker was a chiropractor for 68 years, working out of the family's home. She helped with bookkeeping, but was mainly a homemaker.

The couple moved to Lenox Care Center a year ago after Bessie had a heart attack.

Her husband, who lost his hearing, now communicates through writing.

Dang, that's a long time! You know that'll be the type of couple that don't survive without each other too long. When one passes, the other will go right behind 'em. I can't imagine being with someone for that long...wow.

I heart old people. This is a great story, and I hope if they had children, grandchildren, etc., that they're in close touch with them.

That is such a blessing!! Just think of how much better the world would be if people could just go through the valley in a relationship sometimes, but still make it through instead of bouncing as soon as things get rough. I'm sure they had their bouts, but they made it through 8 decades. That is truly beautiful.

Bless they're hearts. Marriages fall apart within the first or second year. Shoot I should go to them and get their secret so when it's my turn my hubby and I can be like them.........

I was going to make a joke about the correlation of his hearing loss and the longevity of their marriage, but I'm going to pull up.

clap, clap, clap, clap ---------->cyber standing ovation. Props to E.R. and Bessie. handle business, yall.

LOL - only you! :p

But I agree. That is lovely to be married for 80 years. They need to share their secrets.
