Graduate Students
 

Hi y'all!

I have a question for everyone. I just moved up to Michigan to begin my masters at Michigan State University. I never rushed a social sorority while I was an undergraduate, but I'm interested in getting involved! I know that it varies between sororities and colleges about who let's graduate students go through recruitment, and I've also been told that another great way to get involved is to see which sorority needs help. I would love to help out so that sounds like a great idea! If y'all have any advice or comments it would be great! Thanks!

I believe that Phi Sigma Sigma is the only group that will allow graduate students as new members.

They do not have a chapter at MSU.

However, contact the Greek Life office to inquire if any groups are in need of advisors - if your background qualifies you, this might be a great way for you to get involved.

Also, do a search on the topic in Rush - there have been many discussions on it.

You could always consider Alumnae Initiation...some NPC groups have age and other requirements...but check it out still! There are tonnnnssss of threads on here about AI!! Under the Greek Life thread- click on Alumni Initiation!! Best wishes for a successful search!

There are always options! :) While I believe most NPC sororities don't allow graduate students as new members...you should look into other groups that DO allow it! For instance, SAI does if you happen to be musically inclined; I don't know about service groups, but they may. Are there any locals there? Sometimes locals take grad students.

I believe Delta Gamma also accepts graduate students; however, depending on the campus, graduate students might find themselves in the same boat as non-first year potential members (at a significant disadvantage).

There is always Beta Sigma Phi;) Educational status has no baring on membership, and it doesn't matter if your school has a chapter since chapters are community based. Just giving you some facts so that you can make an informed decision!

As you can probably tell from my screen name, I graduated from MSU. :)

Sadly, :( my own chapter at MSU is shut right now.

I agree with one poster. Offer to help. Contact the groups' headquarters, or read their websites, and from there, be pointed towards their local alumnae groups, their collegiate chapter's advisers, etc., and offer to help with recruitment, etc. Many chapters have advisers who aren't members of their own groups or any others, they just want to help collegiate-age women. Have a background with bookkeeping, finances, etc ? Offer to help be a finance adviser (oftentimes due to the technical nature of the finances, the FA isn't an alum).

Then, after hanging around a bit, you could seek alumnae initiation.

I know they dont accept grads in CSUS in the NPC......... cuz i was asking questions and they said you have to be an undergrad and alot of them dont even accept seniors cuz they will graduate soon. so check out what accepts graduate students or you can join an adult sorority....you know what i mean?

You may want to check out the local Alpha Phi Omega chapter. I know my chapter accepts grad students, however I am in Florida.
