US Flag Code question
 

I hope someone more knowledgeable about the US Flag Code than I am can answer this. Between what I've found online and my hazy Girl Scout memories, I'm still not sure of the answer.

I have a US Flag hanging vertically in a window of my house. It has been there since shortly after 9/11/2001. The stars are in the upper left corner as seen from the street, which, as I understand it, is the correct orientation.

The US Flag is currently being flown at half-staff in honor of Ronald Reagan.

Should I be doing anything differently with my flag because of the half-staff requirement, or can I continue to display it as I have been?

Without checking a site on protocol, I would assume that, since a mast is not involved, you don't have to do anything different.

Most people don't realize that, when you DO fly your flag at half mast, you take the flag all the way up first, pause, then bring it to half mast.

Well, it's been even longer since I was in the Boy Scouts, but as I said in another thread about display of the flag, if you could ask President Regan whether he would rather have you display the flag incorrectly -- or not all -- I think he would choose the former.

Besides, what could you do differently in this particular case?

Only flags on masts should be flown at half mast. Flag poles that you put on trees, in your yard/nailed to something should not be lowered. You are displaying your flag correctly. :)

I read something about putting a black band at the bottom of the flag. I can't remember where I read it though so I can't check it for you. Maybe it will jog someone's memory. I think that Chuck might know about this for some reason. He has a lot of information about protocol. :)

I did an article about Flag Etiquette for our newsletter...here's the info:

When the flag is displayed from a staff projecting from a window, balcony, or a building, the union should be at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half staff.

When displaying the flag against a wall, vertically or horizontally, the flag's union (stars) should be at the top, to the flag's own right, and to the observer's left.

You flag is being displayed correctly, so don't worry about it!!
