Posts on GC that could reflect bad on us cuz our GLO is in our signature

This issue was just brought up in the listserv Sorority Alumnae in Yahoo Groups. Some people have stated that Greeks post things on the message boards that are inappropriate when their GLO is represented in their signature because it will reflect bad on the GLO. I can understand this completely. While some things I believe are fine to post because it is our opinion, certain GC'ers are putting their organizations at risk. I was just reading through a thread where the GC'ers were talking about "shot glasses" with their letters on them. This would definately be a no-no I must say and the evidence is right there in the post that could get them in trouble (because obviously their letters are at the bottom of their post). My opinion is that while we are all only human we should be more concious of our actions and what we do that represent not only ourselves but our organizations as a whole.

I know that this may not be right, and that I can sometimes assume too much about a person from the language they use, but it always rubs me the wrong way when I read a post where someone is talking about an experience with their GLO, mention the name several times, and use profanity throughout the post.

As some may know, I used to not give a flying fart about the kinds of threads i would start here in retaliation of another's threads (for example the thread i started about things girls hear guys say durign sex or something like that). Despite having my GLO"s in my signature at the time it seemed to be the "norm of GC" at that time (august '03 through about decemberish '03) so I didnt think too much about it.

However upon becoming an advisor for my chapter and deciding to come back to church and be a practicing Catholic, I now feel like I should set a better example and no longer or try not to (i'm by no means perfect) post such things and try to be more mindful about my use of language here. Now that I have stepped back and looked at some of the things I posted, I feel ashamed and try my best to do better.

So to all the Thetas, AKPsi's, and APO's: If i have offended any of you with my posts, I am sorry.

oooooh weeeee i was guilty of this biz-nass (thanks to MIA librasoul and some of the threads she started :D ), but hopefully i have mended my scandalous ways. :)

the problem is, a lot of ppl's GLO's are in their SN's, too.....or ppl are regular posters so you already know what groups they are in. i don't think we need to censor everything we say or reveal about ourselves. i DO think ppl need to be courteous and respectful of other's...moreso than we need to watch what sexual or drunken stories we tell. i do remove my sig, though, from anything questionable.....last thing i wanna do is cause my online sisters embarrassment. i just think it's just as important to remove our letters from nasty posts as it is to remove them from nasty posts.

If you really believe that your organizations are damaged by risque posts that have your signatures on them . . . Then your organization is already screwed because its been going on for years.

Unless, that is, you believe that the very next one might be the one to cause your entire organization to self destruct . . . lol.

You girls, you are endless in your attempts to micromanage each other. :)

I'm concerned but I don't let it temper my words.

All of us were individuals before we were Greek.

If a GREEK can't separate my words from my affiliation then I really have to question their cognitive abilities.

I don't represent Omega Psi Phi with all that I say. I represent myself. Sometime my Brothers will agree, sometimes they won't.

Worrying about what I say on a website should be the least of their concerns in regards to me upholding the true tenets of Omega.

I know right.

I wish she would join my MSN Group and start topics in the different forums there.

winnie, could you just list all of your questions on one post?

There is limited useage of web space.

There is also a part of GC that you can go back and look for similar threads.

It is the search at the bottom of a Thread on the right side.

There are many that you repost.

Thanks,

It's funny how some of the mods trash talk new users. It's as if they were moderating, but instead they're really just trash talking.

I agree with laidbackfella here.

Me too.

What is offensive differs from person to person. Some people are offended by accounts of underage drinking posted on GC, some aren't. Some people are offended by ANY accounts of drinking posted on GC. Some people are offended by GCers admitting they use or used drugs, have or had political opinions, have or had sex (etc.!), swearing, bad grammar, personal attacks, whatever. Some of this stuff offends me. Some of it doesn't. And I'm not going to tailor my posts to omit anything that might be offensive to someone out there somewhere.

And even if I did, it wouldn't necessarily be all that effective. Some of the people on GC who I think are not the best representatives of their organizations never have any of the above in any of their posts -- and sometimes its their insistence that everyone appear perfect all the time that reflects even worse on their organizations. I know a handful of GCers who have received PMs from people not even in their organizations saying they're a disgrace to XYZ. Personally, I think that things like that can reflect on your organization in a much worse way than, say, admitting that you've experimented with drugs.

Co-sign...

You can't please eveyone...anything you do say on here can be taken the wrong way.

Plus, this is the way I see it...Alpha Sigma Alpha took me as me (not a censored PC version)...so I'm going to be me, an Alpha, a woman, but also an individual....

The only thing that really bothers me in terms of seeing my letters in a signature is ignorance or stupidity. I can handle just about anything else because I respect the individuality of my sisters.

So what's one supposed to do when members of your own organization don't respect your individuality and they chastise you (either publicly or privately) for being "a horrible representation of your sorority"? :) :D
