Sistahgreek,

The title of your paper should be just that: "What the He!! is going on?". I'd give you an "A"! The movie made such an impression on me, I barely remember what happened, except I was quite confused.

I still haven't forgiven my friend for dragging me to see it.

Is you paper on the book or the movie? If its suppossed to be on the book watching the movie is not going to help you-in fact I didn't finish watching the movie because it confused me and the book did not. Although I read the book a while ago I think I can help you-what exactly don't you understand?

Why don't you ask some questions germaine to the movie and then those who have seen it can answer.

Take the parts that you understood and start there. Ask for clarification on the parts that have you puzzled.

I'd start off with about five and ask new ones each day.

Yea is your paper on the book or the movie? Because the two are kind of different. I think the book does a better job of explaining what is going on in the story, that the movie cant really show. Also the movie is creepy and freaky it took me about 3 times to finishing watching it because I would get so lost.

But I did do a paper on Beloved during my undergrad years at Central State. So if you have questions about symbols, methaphors, flashback, foretelling and character analysis I think that I can help. Good Luck :)

I didn't think the movie was soo bad- probably b/c I read the book prior to going to see the movie. My girlfriend at the time was sleep along with the rest of the theater(many walked out) but I was enjoying it..:)

I HATED that LONG DRY movie. The book is sooo much better.

The Movie

i mean what was up with ole girl walking out of the water?
When Paul d came into the house and saw red was that Beloved?
What was the point of the movie?
How is motherhood defined in this crazy movie?
If she was killed at 2 why did she come back grown?
Was she really pregnant?

this is all for now

If you have the time and can speed read I think you need to read the book this weekend...I can't even make sense of your questions but as I didn't see the movie I'm not sure how much of the text was changed.

Seriously...if the paper is suppossed to be about the book do not rely on the movie...for example if you only saw the movie Disappearing Acts and never read the book you missed on a lot...the movie skipped over a lot that gave the characters depth (especially Robin). I've resolved unless my baby is in it (Denzel)just not to see movies based on books I've already read because they just don't live up to the original and don't take the time to develop characters and back stories.

Good Luck.

I really enjoyed Beloved the movie. :(

My take:

i mean what was up with ole girl walking out of the water?
*Water symbolizes rebirth
When Paul d came into the house and saw red was that Beloved?
*Yes
What was the point of the movie?
*That's up to you to decide
How is motherhood defined in this crazy movie?
*Loaded question...I saw it as mommy killing baby, baby coming back to "forgive" mommy, mommy giving up baby again as well as driving a wedge between herself and her other daughter. A bleak picture of motherhood at best.
If she was killed at 2 why did she come back grown?
*It's the progression of life. Anyway, how could a two year old be effective in the movie? ;) Seriously, several times we were drawn into the idea that she was back for good and never really left.
Was she really pregnant?
*Yes

about motherhood

The fact that she killed her child also refers to a practice not uncommon during slavery.

And I don't think Beloved was really pregnant with a child per se.

Notes on Beloved

Indeed.

I say yes because she was as pregnant as her existence was material.

(Epitome: I'm so glad I found out more about Juneteenth on GC. My chapter is planning a service project in honor of Juneteenth. It would be wonderful to see the celebration come back in full force!)
