Phylicia Rashad wins historic Tony Award

By MICHAEL KUCHWARA
AP DRAMA WRITER

NEW YORK -- By winning the Tony for best actress in a play, Phylicia Rashad completed a journey started by Claudia McNeil more than four decades ago in the first production of "A Raisin in the Sun."

On Sunday, Rashad became the first black actress to win a Tony for a dramatic leading role.

She took home Broadway's highest honor for her portrayal of Lena Younger, the tough-minded matriarch of Lorraine Hansberry's landmark drama.

"Often I've wondered what does it take for this to happen. And now I know. It takes effort and grace, tremendous self-effort and amazing grace," said Rashad...

That is fabulous!!! YAY Ms. Rashad!

Am I the only person surprised that there has never been an African American to win in that catergory?

Aww Claire Huxtable doing big things. Not that she wouldn't though. I loved Phylicia forever and always. As for the surprise, nah I'm not surprised. We JUST won oscars in leading roles and not to say the Tony's are nearly as biased but we don't always get the roles in the productions that would lead to nominations.

Congrats to Phylicia Rashad!

Go on head with ya BAAAAD self, Ms. Rashad!

When you love your craft...

Congratulations!

I'm sure for HER it's better than receiving the Oscar. Her first love was for the arts/theater.

I'm really happy for her. :D

I'm happy that she won but I'm afraid that my High Culture Card will be revoked because I chose to watch Game 1 of the NBA Finals instead of the Tony Awards.

This is fantastic!

I was very happy for my soror :D and for the other young AA lady who won for Raisin.

Was it me or did Hugh Jackman do his thang and why is he kinda cute? Then she started shakin' his little booty....:o

But to me, this has been the BEST Tony awards in a long, long, time.

When Avenue Q won I thought they where going to fill the stage, they were soooooooo excited. There was a whole gang of them up on that stage. I'm thinking about making a trip to go and see that play.

And Taye Diggs's wife won for her role in "Wicked" and I think she has a wonderful singing voice, she deserved her award too.

I heard about her win this morning on the radio. I am so very happy for her. :D

I was fortunate enough to see Ms. Rashad in the role of Lena Younger on opening night of A Raisin in the Sun. She was AWESOME. She's so good that she makes you forget that she's Phylicia Rashad. She totally transforms herself. She definitely deserves this honor. Audra McDonald was equally as fantastic. Sanaa Lathan was impressive. Now, Puffy on the other hand.... I swear, I went in with an open mind. I really wanted him to do well, but alas, he was awful. I watched the original A Raisin in the Sun last weekend and it just confirmed that Puffy needs to keep making beats. I mean, he remembered his lines and spoke on cue, but there was no depth to his performance. It was very surface, like he doesn't have a center of pain from which to draw. Sidney Poitier brought so much emotion to the role of Brother. He made you feel the pain of being a downtrodded, broken down, misunderstood black man. In my opinion, Puffy looked like a fool surrounded by a cast of amazingly talented women. So, I say all that to say, gon' head Phylicia.

CONGRATS!! She is most deserving of all accolades. I heard some more stuff about her and her mother today on the radio while driving to work.
