Here's an email my friend just sent me (some editing has been done)


Hi guys,

Unfortunately I have some bad news and desperately need some help. As most of you know Molly my doggy has been living with my friend **** for the past three months. However, his landlord wasn't happy with the situation and wanted her out. We managed to convince him to let Molly stay for a bit longer. However the time is up! We had no one to take her and nowhere to bring her, so unfortunately we had to bring her to a shelter.

Trust me it was hard, in fact I had to walk out cuz I started crying. **** had to finish the work for me. She was adopted on Monday and returned Wednesday to the shelter. They said she was a "door crasher". The shelter called me and told me they will put Molly down, because she's a "door crasher". I explained that I've never had that bad a behaviour when she was with me and I'm sure that she'll be better with the next person. Anyway they dont' want to keep her , they want to put her down. Needless to say I've said my few choice words to them. They will keep her over the weekend, but after that they'll will put her down.

I'm sure she's just acting this way because she's confused and depressed.

If you know anyone who is patient and loving and interested in Molly, please let me know asap.

It's really sad, I wish I could take her but unfortunately I live with my parents for the summer and when I go back to school and they will not let me have a dog.

Anyway, what I really want to know was what a door crasher is. Molly is a little hyper at times (she's had a very traumatic life...she was severly abused abused by her first owner and now is always in need of constant affection, she was hit by a van and just had a non-cncerous tumor removed) but she's never been a bad dog. The worst she ever did was get into the garbage while her owner was a way and with a bit of training she stopped doing that. She was fine with other animals (even a little afraid of them) I'm very sad for my friends (and anyone in the Toronto area looking for a dog please consider Molly this weekend).

I would like to know what a "door crasher" is. I have never heard this term before.

This sounds DEFINITELY like something that a dog who is in new surroundings would do.

Your friend should take Molly out of that shelter and get her into one that is no-kill, ASAP. I have serious questions about a "shelter" that decides to put a dog down based on what ONE person who has had her for two days says - especially if she has never been a behavior problem previously, and she's not a danger to others.

Whatever breed Molly is, have your friend call a breed rescue. They will help.

I wrote to my friend and suggested a rescuer. Molly is a hound/mix (not really sure what she is...she was adopted from the Humane society)

I agree with 33girl... Your friend should definitely try taking her to a no-kill shelter, also known as a rescue organization. They take more time to find a good fit for the dog, and they'll keep her as long as necessary.

I am really sorry to hear about your friends dog. I would definately suggest a no-kill shelter to your friend. There are many out there and many will help break dogs of bad habits. I don't know what a "door crasher" is either but 2 days isn't enough to see a true side of a dog that is obviouslt going through a lot because she isn't with her own. Imagine if someone took you out of your home and put you in a new one. You would act out also.

My friend adopted the dog a few years ago from a shelter.
Then she had to move and her new apartment wouldn't let any pets. So another one of our friends offered to take her and now his landlord is being an ass.

Why did she adopt a dog if she couldn't take care of him???

Why was the dog living with the friend?

I was wondering the same thing. Frankly, I'd have a few choice words for someone who has a dog and doesn't take care of her or find an appropriate place to live where she can have the dog in her own care -- it's not fair for her to blame the shelter.

Taking a dog to a no-kill shelter isn't a sure thing, either. No-kill shelters often turn animals away because they don't have room.

Having worked at an animal shelter, I can tell you that the decision to euthanize a dog for behavior can be made in about five minutes. Wonderful dogs are euthanized all the time because of relatively small problems or issues.

This thread makes me very sad.

I don't understand why someone would adopt the dog from the shelter, then return it after only 2 days of it trying to run outside. They obviously don't have the patience it takes to try to train the dog.

If I lived near you I would, in a heartbeat, offer to take this dog. Of course, I don't know how big it is. Perhaps it is a breed that is better suited for the outdoors?

She's not very big. Medium sized dog. She's part hound (beagle maybe).

You know I don't know why these people wouldn't give Moly another cahnce either. Like many have said probably no patience. She's a very affectionate dog and is constantly looking for it (I mean 27/7...but that's because she was abused by her original owners).

I know some people must think my friend is a complete bitch for adopting a dog and returning her to the shelter. However, her current situation has forced her into this and there's really nothing she could do about it. I know is she could she'd have kept Molly.

Okay, if it is part beagle no wonder it wants to take off out the door. Those dogs take off attached to a leash!

I hope it didn't sound like I was saying she's a bitch -- I don't think that at all. I just could not imagine anything that could possibly happen that would make me take my cats to a shelter -- but that's not to say things don't happen to other people.

I think cats are a little different than dogs. Most apartments would say yes to cats but no to dogs even if there is a no animal policy.
I know I would have a rough time if I had to give up my cat too.
