Ladies Night' Discount Axed in N.J. Bars

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The state's top civil rights official has ruled that taverns cannot offer discounts to women on "ladies nights," agreeing with a man who claimed such gender-based promotions discriminated against men.

David R. Gillespie said it was not fair for women to get into the Coastline nightclub for free and receive discounted drinks while men paid a $5 cover charge and full price for drinks.

In his ruling Tuesday, J. Frank Vespa-Papaleo, director of the state Division on Civil Rights, rejected arguments by the nightclub that ladies nights were a legitimate promotion. Commercial interests do not override the "important social policy objective of eradicating discrimination," he ruled.

Gov. James E. McGreevey criticized the decision, calling it "bureaucratic nonsense."

"It is an overreaction that reflects a complete lack of common sense and good judgment," McGreevey said in a statement.

What do people think? Is this a good or bad thing?

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to discriminate in most cities, it's just that most guys choose not to bitch and moan about it. Most guys I know bring extra cash to a club because 1) they're guys, 2) they might see a girl and offer to buy her a drink, and 3) they know they won't get free drinks because of 1).

Somebody complained about it in Honolulu last year too:

The article mentions my favorite watering hole, Oceans -- where Tuesday night is "Everybody's Ladies' Night" because "it's not your fault you were born a man".

But hey, I guess if he wants to bitch about a $5 cover charge and be an el cheapo, then so be it.

I hope that man never gets laid again.

I heard that he was working on having these installed in all the bars in NJ as well:

(that's a female urinal if you're lost on what that is)

I've heard of similar complaints in other cities.

One bar I know of got around it by offering a discount to anybody (regardless of gender) who wore a skirt to the bar that night. ;)

Any guy not wanting more women in a bar is obviously stupid. No doubt he'll never get laid again.

Jesus.

Could we kinda sorta give this guy a Darwin Award?

I mean, by being such a jackass and ensuring that he'll never get laid again, he is kinda taking himself out of the gene pool.

Man, a bar without ladies night.....everynight could be Jimmy Dean Sausage Night!

What makes you think that he's ever been laid?

That's exactly what they do here. And now that I think about it, they've never said HOW or WHERE you have to wear the skirt. (i.e you could roll it up and tie it around your pants leg a la Chachi Arcola)

I am so glad you remember Chachi and his leg bandanna. I made a comment the other day to someone and got a blank look. Didn't they ever watch reruns? A thumbs up "aaaaaaayyyyyyy" was lost on them as well.

Our only ladies night locally is at the pool hall that also has a bar and food. There is no cover, the drinks are the same price for everyone (1.50 for a well with soda, extra 50 cents for juice). However if a lady leaves her ID for the pool table, the pool is free. We'd usually leave an ID so the guys could have their own table for testosterone competitions, and we'd get another for socializing and fun. Preferably on the *other* side of the bar so our male friends aren't interefering with our "game".

There was a night where anyone in a bikini got in free. Lots of men in bikini tops...no comment on body hair and PBR flesh.

Like I needed another reason to NEVER STEP FOOT IN NEW JERSEY.

They should post his picture in every bar in NJ.

They should name a drink after him. Watered down of course.

They should have a night named after him where all ladies are asked to leave. Drinks cost twice as much. And any dude left in the bar is pummelled within inches of death with beer nuts.

Why have I never heard "I live in NJ and I love it"?

or

"I want to vacation in NJ"?

AlphaSigOU 06-04-2004 08:24 AM

To New York City residents, New Jersey is a Third World country! ;) :) :D
