has anyone read Pledged?
hi all! i just started reading the book Pledged recently. so far, i find it's take on greek life (especially sororities) a little extreme while also truthful. i was wondering if anyone else had a chance to read it yet and what you thought of it? if you have read it, do you think that it is an accurate portrayal of sororities?

hi! If you use the search key in the upper right hand corner of your screen, and type in "Pledged," you will find several threads that have been started about the book, and throughts of those who have read it, as well as those who have not.

Welcome to GreekChat! There's been several threads that already discuss Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororites; no need to start another one.
Check out this thread: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...threadid=50220 And this one: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...threadid=45894 To all us 'old heads' on GC... no need to dump on a newbie because he or she isn't well versed in how to navigate through the myriad of threads. |
If you can get it at the public library, it might be worth a read. If you see it at the bookstore, it's probably down to $1.50 or so on the discount rack, so maybe that'd be worth it... I wouldn't necessarily spend money on it -- it's a book written mainly by lies and fabrications, so really not worth your money.

Yup it can be a little extreme in that book :D. She has a good writing style though - it's hard to put down! (I bought a copy and have read it). It does concentrate as far as traditionally white sororities, on the larger Greek system of the colleges in the Southern US states though. As opposed to trying to be all encompassing. It is a good read. Per what adpiucf said, I think this thread is the best one: http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=50220 A lot of people have shared opinions in there, some of the other threads got heated... so that one sprang up. Look forward to seeing more of your thoughts over there and since I haven't seen your posts before, welcome to GreekChat! - decadence p.s. Don't get upset by any suggestions you do a search, some people get sensitive about stuff that has supposedly been discussed before, or get sensitive if you bring up an old thread. Sometimes it might seem like you can't win. ;) With almost 50,000 threads chances are most things might've been touched on but it's always good to have fresh ideas, inputs and experiences. Using the search function is useful to keep things in one place/easy to find plus to learn stuff that's been said that might be of interest. But like I say it's maybe just us being neat freaks. I'll stop rambling now. x |

No one dumped on squashfly3! adpiucf suggested squashfly3 search for her/himself & I suggested the thread be closed. No problems here. :) |
thanks for the links to the other threads...sorry to open up a sore topic again.

Yay! Finally, a positive reception for a newbie! I think crzychx had a good suggestion, and it wasn't flame-worthy.
Or maybe, one of the mods can post a "New to Greek Chat: Read This First" Thread in EVERY FORUM advising newbies to read through posts and do a search before asking questions, to avoid the GC Gestapo. Natch, people are still going to post first without looking, but it might help help some new folks out and avoid others from getting jumped. |
Now that sounds like a good idea... if only I had the time to write such an FAQ... :(

Awww everyone was so nice to squashfly3. When I brought up Pledged everyone flipped that I was so late to take notice.

KDAngel, aww c'mon you know it wasn't personal!
Either a) people at the time were feeling overwhelmed by all the threads and so overreacted or b) People were more likely to nudge you about it a little more because Miss squashfly3 was so much newer to the boards and wasn't here at the time there were other threads. Either way no harm done, no-one think you're public enemy #1! :) |
Actually guys, squashfly isn't really any newer than KDAngel; look at the date they registered. ANd I've seen squashfly post on here before.
Truth is, people did jump on KDAngel for starting a duplicate thread. ANd that's one thing that pisses me off about GC. People go crazy if someone makes the ungodly mistake of starting a duplicate thread...I get a little tired of the rudeness towards those that do. Though I agree, it was nice to see a positive reception for squashfly! So maybe there's hope for GC yet. :) |
I had to do a search to find her thread sairose, I'd hardly say people "flipped" there. My post was nice [at least intended to be] and the first post in response to hers just pointed to another thread with a smiley.
