How far would you go to protect the Security of your organization's private info?
 

I realize that all organizations run differently, but since I have been on GC I have come to respect you all's opinion about alot of things and that is why I am aking these questions in this forum.

I recently received an email from a member of my Sorority’s SOSOR’s ONLY list serve. One of the sorors from my chapter uploaded a private document and password protected the document (all initiated sorors are told this password after they become full fledged members). The email was from a young lady indentifying herself as my "Soror" whom I did not recognize saying she was having problems getting into this document (I have never seen her on the list serve before this encounter).

I responded by telling her to use our organizational password. She emails me back saying she is a Neo who just crossed in March of this year and does not know the password, and did not even realize we had a password. I am on the verge of freaking out at this point. Therefore, I proceeded to pointedly question her and I still refused to give her the password.

I later on get another email from another one of my Sorors defending this young lady and stating that it is true that several members of chapters in her region did not get handbooks, passwords, bylaws, or other essential material upon the becoming full fledged members of our organization. I am sitting here FURIOUS. I told her to go to her chapter president because I cannot help her.

My questions are as follows:

1) Am I wrong for being angry about this situation?
2) Did I over react by questioning who she was?
3) Would you have also refused to give out that kind of information under the same circumstances, even if the person was supposedly a Soror on your orgs. private list serve?
4) Has any of you ever encountered anything like this before?
5) How would you have handled the situation?
6) Should I apologize to this young lady for Pointedly questioning her idenity?

5) The same as you did, but I would have put her on blast on the list. That way if she really is legit, sorors that you KNOW are sorors can verify that she was MADE, as in, someone they know was THERE to SEE her cross.
6) Not until you find out that she really is your soror, but as a soror, she should understand. The whole situation sounds sketchy at best.
