the average sorority girls
 

can someone describe to me the average sorority gurls? from the way they dress to the way they walk, more descriptive the better. I told my boyf earlier that I was interested in joining a sorority. He said that my personality doesn't fit in a sorority, that I won't converge well with those girls. He said that those are the girls that I see on tv, they are glamorous, rich, and "mainstream". My bf is in a frat, so his words should be right. is the greek system for everyone? By the way, I will be a freshman at UC Berkeley, any Berkeley greeks' or general greeks' comment or advise will be helpful

Wow, your boyf sounds like a shmuck. Telling his woman she wouldn't fit into a sorority after saying that you wanted to join? Maybe he's the one that doesn't fit in to the greek system. Personally, I have met ANYONE that wouldn't fit into the greek system. There are chapters for any type of person in college, smart, social, business, service, big, small, dirty, and clean. Go to rush, don't ask what a typical greek is, there is no easy way to answer that.

Every sorority is different, I am sure you can find one to fit your lifestyle. You cant group all people into one catagory, just because they are in a greek organization. All greek organizations have a strong point.

I agree with what has been said. I believe that there's a sorority out there for everyone. You just have to look for it. I say go to Rush and see for yourself if you fit in. Don't let your bf tell you whether or not you will. Rush is a fun time. Considering I am in the CAL(Berkeley) area, I can tell you first hand, you will have MANY choices to pick from. NPC, NPHC, Asian Intrest, Latino Intrest, Multicultural, etc. I would really suggest waiting until spring before you jump into the sorority scene. The school alone has so much going on you'd really want to get settled before joining the mass hysteria of the CAL greek family. It would give you a chance to check out all the houses also.

I see from your profile you are from the city. Why not hop on Bart one day and get off at the Berkeley station, walk up to the campus(parking is a nightmare) and cruise around the greek row? (The row map is on the CAL greekpage website) That way you can familiarize with the area. Also some of the greeks are comming back to town now since school will be starting soon. Maybe you can ask them some general questions....

Great info Xgirl!! Just one correction, there are only 4 NPHC Sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho Sororities Inc. Gamma Phi Delta is a BGLO, but she is not in the NPHC.

The average sorority girl is fat, skinny, beautiful, ugly, tall, short, rich, poor, nice, bitchy, slutty, and highly moral. In other words, there is no average!

Does your bf go to UC-Berkley? It sounds like he's being pretty closed minded. Maybe from what he's seen though, all of the sor. girls he's met have been conformists that are totally unlike you. Who knows!

no, greek life is not for everyone, but most girls who really want to be a part of it can find a place. it is true, each campus has a few houses like the ones he described (rich, great clothes, perhaps elitist)..... but there are many more sororities at each school that are all about genuine-ness and individuality. the sisters don't necessarily change themselves to conform to one superficial ideal, but they do respect & enjoy each others' diversity. there is no reason why you wouldn't thrive in one of these types of sororities.

Thank you for all your replies. I will not dump my bf for what he said. Actually, he was the one who changed my view on the greeks. I used to think that fraternities and sororities are for people who didn't get enough popularity in high school. He showed me that there's a positive side to the group. I think in his eyes, I am an individual and not a conformist. I do not wear make-up, I do not spend my excess time coordinating outfits, and the past academic years, I went on a month of hardcore mountaineering, spent a semester volunteering in South America. I think he is right. I belong in a Red Cross org. more than a soro.

I wouldn't go as far as suggesting to dump the guy over making a comment like that. I just believe people have to make their own decisions in life, and have the support of another even if it doesn't seem right. I'm not looking for a debate here, so that's all I want to say on that. Seriously though, I just hope you don't decide not to even try to join just based on 1 fraternity brother's opinion. Go make your own opinions and decisions on what your personality fits into or not.
