hazing incident
Wow...I just realized something...I am in a sorority and have always been or at least thought I have been against hazing until my mother made a point...in high school we hazed...
on my dance team the seniors "initiated" the freshman into the squad...for the week at camp before the school year started (summer time) the freshman became slaves and had to cater to their master (senior)...including waking up at 4am to get the breakfast in bed...rubbing their stinky feet after 16 hrs of practic...taking showers last which meant no warm water...running extra laps...performing embarrassing acts in front of groups beyond the hundreds (we were at camp with the band)...wearing crazy outfits in 100 degree weather during practice etc...and at the end of the week there was a sister event where we had a "dance" and bonded since they made it...I just NEVER realized how similiar...some of the freshman would get so sick from all the endured etc...I remember I personally had fun being a slave and made the best of it but I remember some girls crying and being forced to do stuff (and this is a public high school dance team)...I also remember being a senior and having my fun...i felt I had earned it and it made me a stronger person after going through it...I still dont believe in hazing in college frats/sororities...but that makes me a hypocrite....comments???? |
Obviously college has allowed you to see that hazing is not neccesary. If we all tried to analyze the things we believed in high school compared to what we believe as adults we would go crazy. Think or yourself as growing older for the better!

Hazing occurs all over the place. Including high school and college bands, dance teams, athletics, etc.,fraternities and sororities, military organizations, and even adult organizations.
There is a difference between having a little fun with your new members (whatever kind of organization you're in) and hazing. It takes a level of maturity to understand the difference, and admit that hazing isn't in the best interest of the group. Just look at it as learning from your past experiences. |

You are absolutely right. Hazing occurs in all levels of schooling, but why is it always associated with the Greek system. I wouldn't consider you a hypocrite since, in high school, hazing is rarely brought to the students attention. We all just saw it as a part of the high school experience. Why hazing is not seen as a bad thing in high school and a horrible thing in college i don't know. But, like you, I am totally against hazing & am curious to hear what others think. I would just like to say that hazing is not that bad of a thing, if it is done under the consent of all involved and is in good fun, it can bring chapters together. I am not in with duck taping people and shooting them with beebe guns (as a Michigan frat is), but if the event is structured not to hurt anyone, it is ok. Hazing occurs in everyday life, not just in the greek system (as mentioned in HS). Lay off the greek system.

Well, I personally feel that hazing, taken to an extreme, is wrong. What Cali was describing is not a big deal (for a guy) I think, but I think that girls take it WAY too seriously. Hazing taken to an extreme, though, is a bad thing, and people have died because of it. You really need to watch it, though. The way the hazing law is written (at least in Texas) can mean that baiscally anything can be considered hazing, including having the pledges (new members) do a fundraiser or philantropy.

Genius will not, unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "Press On" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. [This message has been edited by GregFIJI (edited January 03, 2000).] |
Cali you brought back memories. My highschool dance team put us on line for a week during band camp. The two things i remember most are them coming to our houses super early in the morning with our parents permission of course, dragging us out of bed in our pj's and taking us to Micky D's for breakfast on the way to band camp how embarrassing! And yes our big sisters dressed us up as ugly and as disgusting as possible and made us sing and do our opening basketball routine in front of YES THE FOOTBALL TEAM. Looking back it was MAD FUN AND HILARIOUS, NO ONE GOT INJURED. That's the way pledging should and can be. I will always have fond memories of my team. But there is always a lunatic out there who wants to HAZE.
