Ligers and Tigons

They really need something else to do, because what is the point of this? I can understand cross breeding WITHIN a species but ACROSS species? WHY?????

I don't even understand how the animals learn to survive since the habits of lions and tigers are so different. For instance, lions hunt and live in packs, whereas tigers tend to fly solo. So, who teaches these animals what to do? However, I guess they are bred and born into captivity, so it really doesn't matter. The idea is really just stupid.

HOLLA!

LOL... why is that the second thing I thought of when I saw the pics?

after I thought about how STUPID this is... of course...

But seriously, I think this is cruel... these animals are sterile, have shorter lifespans, are basically guaranteed to suffer from cancer and other degenerative diseases, and will never be able to live in the wild... all to be some side show in the local zoo. I think this is just prelude to a fur-harvesting scheme, to be honest... aren't tigers andlions endangered, and therefore not legally huntable? "Tigons and Ligers" are neither, so it'll probably be open season. I won't be surprised if Lil' Kim is rocking one of these coats next season, and it becomes the next hot thing.

I'll wear the heck out of some *naturally born, put by God-on-this-earth* fur, but that would be really sad, to basically create a new species for harvesting like that. :(

This thread made me think of this

Does anyone ever wonder what would happen to man, had God not made us ruler over all things on earth? I mean think about. The problem with us now, is that we think we are God, because we can't see him (or for whatever reason people think they are as mighty as God) so we feel we are allowed to mess with his creation. We would look mighty crazy if God had placed us under monkeys. Then we'd be walking around half human- half ass.

Just my opinion.

So which one is the King of the Jungle?

AKA_Monet 05-12-2004 10:37 PM

Those pictures are modified.

Besides they are bullshitting you.

Genetically, it would be impossible to breed across species like that.

Tigers have different genes than lions. Although they are of the same Family group under the animal kingdom, the genes are not "syngeniec", they are orthologous.

Aside from it being a waste of time to develop some stupid procedure like that (DAYUM glad that is not my research), the practicalities of animal care would be psychotic. Tigers require more food than lions. In fact, lions only eat when necessary.

If anything, Lions are more closely related to Hyenas than Tigers.

However, the Bengal Tigers (like Tony the Tiger) seem to fair well in the African Wetlands and Estruaries when they were relocated from Asia...

The only way some crazy cloning scheme like that might occur after 1000 tries if there was IVF manipulation, with H.A.T. hybridoma techniques and hope there is enough diploidy to implant in some large domestic cat... But good luck with that...

You better do that! With the with the words I can't pronounce! :D Are you sure this is fake? Because I recall reading a news story on this from a reputable source some time ago, could have been AP newswire, and PBS has an article about the "species" as well. I thought that one picture with the man holding the tiglilon (whatever) at the microphone was a tad suspect, and the fact that they have to estimate the weight of their own animal struck me as odd, but I do recall having a good reason from a while back ago, other than these two links, to not have doubted that this was true. Or maybe I'm just that naive. :p

From his youth he seemed not to belong with the other chimps, preferring instead to socialize with humans. He always walked upright and learned to use the toilet. His owners found that he enjoyed chores such as pushing a wheelbarrow and preparing dog food for the family dogs. Oliver was also fond of relaxing by watching television and drinking Seven-Up and whiskey. "

My co-worker was telling me about this just yesterday.

They're showing a LIGER on the Discovery channel right now, and he is HUGE - like 5 feet high standing on 4 paws - and I want to give him a big hug. Apparently the reason they get soooo big is the female lion has a gene that controls growth and the female tiger does not.

The "humanzee" is next. I read an article about him and he actually was evaluated - DNA & such - and he isn't part human. He's just a freaky chimp that likes to smoke cigars.

I wish those pictures were modified, but they aren't. A couple months back Animal Planet did a special on people who take Lions and Tigers in after they are discarded by their owners. This one family took in a Tigon. They did an update and it died not too long after the special was made.

They also had other animals like a Horse/Donkey....a Honkey I'm guessing..... ........maybe a Dorse....;)

A mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey...

I dunno...

Naturally, in the wild, lions and tigers don't really mix like that...

Now, I can do an embryonic transplantation on a lion embryo into a tiger womb or vice versa... But, if it will take... Your guess is a good as mine.

The Homo troglodytes, e.g. chimps, completely differ from Homo sapiens sapiens, e.g. humans. Humans and Chimps do not cross. The genes and chromosomes are a bit off. Chimps share 98% of the genes in the human genome. We have 23 pairs of chromosomes, chimps have 21 pairs... There is something inherent in the chimps DNA that does not recombine at all with the human DNA in homologous recombination during the second stage of meiosis. Something in the microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA recombination that is off.

Moreover, that is why there were Neanderthals and the Cro Magnon man. Their DNA is not interspersed with Modern Human Being DNA. That became extremely apparent in that last few Nature magazine articles. And the DNA-chips did not show any sequences from Homo erectus in the Homo sapiens sapiens genome or transcriptomes--or proteomes for that matter...

That is what 1000s of years of evolutionary difference will do... Besides, mutation rates are slow in evolutionary time.

I am not talking about "evolution" in Biblical terms. I am talking about scientific facts that can be found doing a "PubMed" search at the National Institutes of Health Website.

However, eventually, with biotechnology, I could probably generate some transgenic cross breedings that could take place with a haplotype map development and Human Genome Project completion... But, that might take 10 years to develop and we scientists have waaayyyy tooo much illnesses to cure to do some isht like that.
