Relay For Life -- Cancer Fundraiser
I just wanted to stop in to plug the Relay For Life, which is an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. It's designed to both commemorate and honor victims and survivors of cancer, as well as to make money. It's a pretty straightforward: you raise money by collecting pledges (not NMs, the cash kind) from people, and by any other kind of low-key fundraising, like bake sales. Then you and as many of your friends / GLO members you can get together camp out all night. The idea is to have at least one person walking a set course (for example, around the quad or a track).
My chapter did Relay this year on our own campus. Many colleges have their own Relay, but if yours doesn't, there are usually local events on a city- or county-wide basis. If not, you can always start your own. :) ACS is really great about helping to start these kind of events. They're totally easy to join -- all you need to do is find some people willing to participate, name your team after your GLO, get some camping gear, and you're good to go. Everything else is set up for you. It's a great way to improve your PR, it's a wonderful cause (all proceeds go towards cancer research), and it's also a great sister/brotherhood activity. It's also a great way for Panhellenic and IFC to engage in some friendly competition -- again, for a good cause. Anyway, if you'd like any more info, there's a Relay For Life website at http://www.cancer.org/docroot/GI/gi_1.asp, or you can poke around the American Cancer Society site (http://www.cancer.org). Or you can PM me, and I'll try and help you out. Happy philanthropying! |

I've participated in Relay For Life for 2 years now, on my college's FIne Arts Department team. It really is a lot of fun, and such a worthwhile cause.

Relay for Life is relatively new on our campus, but for the past three years, my chapter has participated in honor of lost loved ones.
It's definitley a GREAT event... we setup our tent, camping chairs, bbq, and live it up ALL night long! |
My chapter's doing Relay together for the first time this year. Many of the girls have done it with other friends and family members, but we're definitely excited to be participating as sisters!

Relay for Life is a great cause and it's a lot of fun. They had it at my school about 3 weeks ago for the first time. We combined a team with AST we called our team Morning Glory Rose after both of our sorority flowers. I'm not sure how much money our team raised, but our school raised I believe about $25,000- $26,000. It's a totally worthwhile cause and a great time, I reccomend it to anyone who has the chance to do it.

One of the greatest things about "Relay" is that the money raised goes to both local and national Cancer treatment centers.
My chapter has done it for 2 years, and I did it with my church for two years before that. Erica |
We did relay for life too and split up in to a few teams. It was soo much fun and really touching because a girl in my pledge class is a cancer survivor so she spoke! :)

My chapter participated this spring. It was a good time.

My chapter along with KD and TKE at MSU did it for Greek Week this spring and got first place and raised a little over $9,000 dollars.
