There has been many rumors about the draft starting back

I heard about that. There has been also some talk about including women in there. If the draft starts back and includes women, then I will not fight. Instead, I'll be heading to Canada. Now, I know that some of you all will say that I'm a coward, because I do not want to fight, but I do not want to die not living a full life. Besides, I want to live to get married and have children and have a career. Besides, if the draft started, then it would be like Vietnam all over again.

Are you normal at any point in the day?

Right... well you are a coward if that's what you'd do. It's not for political reasons, you just want to run away and save your own skin. I don't really know what else you could call it.

You're willing to sit here and enjoy the benefits of freedom without having to pay the cost? Nothing's free. If called, it is an American's duty to serve. If you truly believe what you're saying, you should move to Canada (or some other state that stands by and watches other country's young people die so they don't have to) now and start proceedings to become a citizen there.

Before you reply and ask me why I'm flaming you or whatever, ask yourself what exactly you expected when you started a thread like this?

Gee... glad to see that someone else has stepped up for Rudey and made the anti-Canada bash...

The reason the Canada accepted draft-dodgers during Veitnam had something to do with the fact that we felt that being drafted to fight in a war you objected to was illegal (in much the same way as Britain does).... further the reason why most came here is that it was prefrable to Mexico... and cheaper to get to than the UK and the rest of Europe.

As for other countries standing by and watch another's die so they don't have to... the same charge could be made about peacekeeping and the lack of American involvement until the last decade....

You are beyond retarded but not like in an idiot savant way either.

Well bud, I wouldn't have mentioned Canada, except for the fact that Canada is where the should-be-expatriot plans to move if she's called on to give back to the country that has given her a lot. Yeah, but now that you mention it, Canada is a safehaven for cowards due to their cowardly policy of letting Americans die for their freedom.

As much as this sounds like cowardness, I don't know if I totally disagree. If women were included in the draft and I got picked I would go, but I really would not want to. I fully support troops who are at war now, but I don't support this war at all. Its gotten out of hand, and I will not risk my life for it. I wouldn't run away though, I'm not like that.

I 100% agree with you. This war is wrong. I fully support the troops, but this war is out of control.

nucutiepie 05-07-2004 11:18 PM

If the draft gets reinstated i don't think I would go but I think that mostly in light of what happened at the Abu Ghraib (sp?) prison. Apparently of the soldiers charged with abusing the prisoners several were women and it has been speculated that their major reason for perpetrating the abuse was because to fail to do so would have been disobeying orders from their superiors. Now I don't support this war either, and while I do support our troops, I don't support commanders ordering their subordinates to torture Iraqi prisoners, nor would I want to belong to a military that condoned such behavior - on ANY level (i'm talking about seargeants here not rummy).

What? Only Americans sacrificed their lives for my freedom? Gee I guess that whole American Rebellion, War of 1812, Fenian Raids, Boer War, World War I, World War 2, Korea, Peacekeeping, Afghanistan things that Canadians have died for were nothing.... hmm... we fight were and when we see a credible and convincing threat, so just because we didn't jump on the Bush's Baghdad or Bust Bandwagon doesn't make us cowards...

honeychile 05-07-2004 11:56 PM

When I attend the Memorial Day Services at Arlington Cemetery, I'll be sure to mentally "tell" the acres of former soldiers your-oh-so noble viewpoint.

If you have the courage to PM me your real name, that is.

valkyrie 05-08-2004 12:13 AM

So are some of you saying that unless one supports every war America has been or ever will be involved in, one is a coward? I personally would never, ever fight in a war that I thought was wrong, no matter what my government told me to do. If that makes me a coward than go ahead and call me one, but in my opinion it's more cowardly to go along with the government even when you are morally opposed to what its officials are doing.

He's right. To attack Canada because they don't always agree with our viewpoint is short sighted and, frankly, arrogant. RA has been known to tick me off with what I sometimes consider smug and condecending comments about the US and particularly our Military, but there are very few countries who have been a better friend to us in both war and piece.

Further, if there is no Canadian law or US/Canadian treaty that is broken when a US Citizen chooses to go to Canada to avoid the draft, and I have never heard of one, there really isn't anything for Canada to do to those people is there?

So, until a law or treaty is in place, we should get off the high horse and respect their right to disagree.

DeltAlum 05-08-2004 12:35 AM

Rollergirl,

Having said the above, I could accept your dissent had it been on moral or religious grounds. Or that you simply don't believe in this or other wars. I can live with that and even support your decision.

Frankly, though, the reasons you give above come off as selfish and petty. I don't know if you're a coward or not, but I also don't know anyone else who doesn't want the same things you mention, but are still ready to defend the country if and when asked.

Well stated, DeltAlum!
