Ok experts, I am begging for a lil advice:

So yesterday I'm cooking some yummy Hungarian food. And I'm almost finished, take the boiling water off the stove, and wait! I need butter. So I run to the fridge, open the butter, throw the lid down, throw the butter in, and yay it tastes better than my mom's.

I did not realize that I tossed the plastic lid onto one of the burners.

It melted so badly that, although I threw the lid away, the plastic solidified onto the burner and began to burn. I somehow got the burner off the stove, took it outside, and tried to scrub it with soap and water. No luck. My roommate threw baking soda on it (lots of BS) and we left it outside overnight.

Now it's so hard you would have swore it came that way.


Any advice? Suggestions? (Besides "don't cook" and "you're an idiot") I can't imagine I'd be able to go buy one replacement burner :(

I hate to tell you this, but I think there's a new burner in your future. The good news is that it probably doesn't cost as much as you'd think. If you can get the model number, try ebay. I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of "strange" items I've seen listed there!

Rudey is exactly right. Heat it up again, and then try to scrub it off while its still warm.

Just to be on the safe side, make sure that while you're heating it your vent is on. Some plastics give off noxious fumes when they burn.

what type of a stove top is it? (ie glass top or metal rings, gas or electric)

I unfortunately agree with honeychile - your best bet is to try to get a new burner. Is it possibly still under warranty? I doubt plastic incidents will be covered, but they may still be able to help you find a replacement. Otherwise try your local appliance store and see if they can give you a model number and source.

If the part where the plastic is is exposed to the flame (assuming it's gas - or even electric if you cook on high) I'd be wary of trying to salvage it. First off you're going to smell plastic burning from now on when you use that, and if there's any residue left, it could start a fire.

What if I were to heat it up with a lighter outside, then scrub it off? Only thing is, my deck is wooden......I'm just not cut out for a life of domestic servitude :(
