For those of you who are historically minded, I got this from a reputable source:
Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.... But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York....The ship hit an iceberg and sank....and the cargo was forever lost.... The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery....were disconsolate at the loss.... Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day.... The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th....and is known....of course.... as Sinko de Mayo.... |
OMG. honeychile, that is hilarious!!!

Actually, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory by the Mexicans over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The actual Mexican Independence Day is September 16.

I mean this in good fun, so please, no one get offended. When I was growing up in FL, some of our teachers would make fun of the "Southern" way of speaking Spanish...it was always good for a chuckle. Then, when I started taking Spanish class in college in NC, the first day of class everyone thought I was crazy because I was laughing so hard.....the boy was prounouncing "gracias" exactly the way we would typify a Southerner to do so (as in grassy-ass). |
My coworkers and I went to this great Mexican place for lunch that serves free maragritas (they do this all the time, not just Cinco de Mayo). Needless to say, I'm going to be pretty useless at work for the rest of the day.
Free margaritas are my friend. :D |
