Sad about Semi-Formal
This Friday we are having our semi-formal and I'm not too excited about it. It's first one I'm going to since I missed it last year because I didnt want to go by myself. Well again this year I'm going by myself andwith the addition to not clicking with anyone in the chapter, it's going to be a very lonely evening. :( My dress is a beautiful pale blue from David's Bridal and costs $190, it's just a shame I wont have anyone to dance with in it. Now, I' regreting buying it because I don't want to go. Any advice on how to get through it??

Okay, right now, you're not going to want to hear this but... I had a good guy friend in college who taught me a lesson that has lasted a lifetime.
Read this and memorize: "If I go somewhere and do not have a good time, I have nobody to blame but myself." You obviously want(ed) to go to the Semi-Formal, or you wouldn't have bought such a lovely dress. On SF night, get dressed up as if you have a date with a Prince! Be sure not to drink much, since you're out of sorts, and it would be too easy to get really wasted. And remember, you're going to have a great time, because you're going to have a good attitude!! |
I agree with Honey. BUT, on the off chance, do you have a good guy friend that you could bring? One that might make you feel a little better, or atleast have a ball with? Or what about a good girl friend. No one ever said SF was for men and women couples only. :) I know my best friend and I could have had a serious blast at SF. :)

I diddn't have a date for semi my Junior year, so I asked this freshman guy in my Jazz Choir, he was totally thrilled to be asked and we had a blast dancing the night away. When in doubt be kind to underclassmen ;)

Lindsey,
You should go!!! It will be fun. I will be going as with several other alumns, you will have us :D Don't let not having a date deter you from going and having a blast. I was nervous too with my 1st semi formal. I had a date (which turned out to be a dud), but I had fun with my sisters, dancing, and hanging out. I'll pm ya when you are on AIM this week. Maybe we can meet up before hand and ride together. Let me know. *hugs* Pi love, Ally |
Why not ask your Diamond Sister to set you up with a friend of hers? I'm sure she knows a guy who'd love to go with you. Plus, if her date and yours are brothers or even just friends, then there is a way to hang out with your Diamond for the night (without is being just one-on-one). OR, ask your President, NMC, or other older sister. I'm sure any sister would be thrilled to set you up!!
At my chapter, sisters would ask if anyone was in need of a date and then introduce them to a guy-friend that wanted to go to our formal. (ALL the guys wanted to go to the ADPi events! ) |
Another added plus of bringing a guy that knows other guys who are there, is that you DON'T have to babysit him the entire night. You're free to go and hang out with anyone and he can sit and talk to his boys.

I agree w/ FirstandFinest about asking your sisters! For our formal, lots of sisters found dates for other sisters who didn't know any guys to ask to formal. It worked out great!
I know the first few ADPi events I went to, my Alpha class usually stuck together (mainly because we were all new and were all still getting accustomed to the whole sorority thing). It worked out great because now we're all really close to each other in addition to branching out and being close to other sisters as well. |

LOL!!! My senior year, I was dating a non-greek named Joe. He became really sick (yeah, I questioned it, too!) and cancelled on our Semi-Formal abou 6 hours before it was to start. I was one of the sisters who really had campaigned for this, and I was MAD! We even had favors with the guys' names on them! So... I opened my bedroom door, and said, "QUICK!! I need a date named Joe!!" My sisters came through, and Joe #2 never found out that there had been a Joe #1!!!! ETA: Yes, I made Joe #1 pay for doing that to me!! A guy friend who was then Pledge Master offered to have "his" pledge class pick up his car, and turn it around (it was parked on a very busy one way street!), but I settled for making him feel guilty for about a month or so. |

Seriously, I highly advocate going with a great guy friend or a guy friend of another sister. Every "formal" I went to I always invited my absolute best guy friend from college, and he absolutely loved it (he was non-Greek, too) and he knew a lot of the sisters from hanging out with us or through their dates, whom he was friends with. I also set up one of my Alpha classmates with another guy friend the first formal I went to, and he became one of the "token" ADPi dates for all the formals...he went to every formal that he was at school for (he studied overseas for an entire year, so he missed those formals). Most of the time, the guys will start talking about something random to one another, so we don't even really have to worry about keeping them entertained at all! Something that our chapter did my senior year (we actually took the idea from another sorority ~ I think it was the KD's!) was called "Get Your Sister A Mister" semi-formal. Each sister wrote down her top three choices for who she'd like to go to formal with, and then another sister was in charge of calling the guy and asking him to go to the formal with their sister Susie (which TOTALLY took the pressure off of asking a guy for yourself, especially for those who were really shy and were asking someone they weren't dating but may have been interested in). No one was to know who their date was (some wound up finding out), and when they walked into the CR the night of the formal, the guys were there with a note around their necks saying "I belong to ______". It was a lot of fun, and we had a great time at that formal! |

I was never so glad that his name was "Harrington" or "Chandler" or something else uncommon!
Although, to this day, everytime I see that corner where his car was parked, I laugh to myself about what would have happened! |
PiLove - I hope you go to formal today and have a blast!!

Any updates?
