So, we're mentioned in "Pledged"

Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, page 27:

"You will never hear a southern lady say, "She was a communications major at the University of Mississippi." You'll hear, "Oh, honey, she was a Delta Gamma at the University of Georgia, so she's be a great Junior Leaguer."

Not sure that I'm thrilled that my chapter is mentioned in such a book like that....

Don't worry hun, I wouldn't be too thrilled either.

But the sad part is, it's common to hear that (but I've never heard the Junior League part).

I don't know that its necessarily said to say "I was a Delta Gamma at UGA" just the junior league part. Its as though she is saying that all we are good for is throwing teas and hanging out at the country club. It couldn't have been "I was a Delta Gamma at Georgia" and then mention that said DG went on to become a brilliant businesswoman or something of that nature.

AUDeltaGam 05-04-2004 11:27 PM

All she's doing is exaggerating the sterotypes of southern sororities. I don't like her much ;)

AnchorAlum 05-04-2004 11:46 PM

It's all about selling books. And little about accuracy.
Ironically, today's Junior League is more about business connections in many major cities around the country, including the South.
It sounds like she is working with 1970's stereotypes.

what's funny about this is that there are a ton of delta gammas (some from UGA) in my chapter of the junior league.

Yeah so, I work at a bookstore. I was ringing up a customer when I saw that she was purchasing this book. We started talking about it and I got interested so I checked it out. I'm about 100pgs into it and it's interesting to say the least. Anyone else reading or finished it yet?

AnchorAlumna 05-06-2004 10:53 PM

As a sustainer (alumna) member of a Junior League, I have to say that the comment was probably meant as a slam but is actually a compliment. Join a Junior League and you will work your rear off! Junior Leagues are, true, about business connections (so are sororities) but they are also very much about finding and feeding needs in the community across the socio-economic spectrum. Most Jr. Leagues, even in the South, have members of many races.

I just thank the lord that nothing more about DG was in the book, extensive "secrets" (which acording to other greek chat links aren't even true) told from other houses, i would be very sad if our ritual was broadcast around the world. There is one other mention of us in the book, it's about seeing a DG "footprint" in the sand in Jamacia. However my school, Southern Methodist University, was talked about a loooooooooot in the book, so I just haven't decided how I want to feel about this yet!
