the way i see it, hazing considerably demans the person physically and more importantly, mentally - it is pure humiliation..

Kevin 05-03-2004 08:19 PM

I interpret it according to the rules of my organization. If I have a question, IHQ doesn't mind a call. Thus far, I've never had a question though.

mizz_kelli 05-03-2004 08:21 PM

ok so like you say demeaning like would you think most people could interpret the hazing acts through common sense or what?

i like to think most would..

mizz_kelli 05-03-2004 08:24 PM

ok so my theory on the way i think is right for the most part...i mean if certain acts make you emotionally distaught or physically enable to do things...wouldnt you leave? i mean wouldnt it be your first instinct to leave a situation?

That would be my first instinct.

However, a greater purpose could be served if you turned the group in question in to their national HQ.

I've actually seen this happen at two chapters on my campus -- the HQ came and booted almost all of the actives, initiated the new members and basically rebuilt the chapter from the ground up. While now, it may not seem like it's out of hand, later, you never know, someone could get hurt or killed. Personally, I wouldn't like something like that on my conscience. These folks know they're in the wrong and choose to do it anyway. They need a wake up call and I hope you do the right thing and turn their butts in.

Ok I foudn my old old pledge book, or alpha book. In it it states

Hazing is any situation which creates mental or physical abuse, discomfort, embarrassment, ridicule, or harassment, whether on or away from sorority property.

We DO not tolerate hazing at all. We treat our new girls like princesses. We take their plates from them, we do not assign them any work, we dont give them chores, we dont let them help the chapter clean or anything. I mean we DONT let them lift a finger.

If you have a question about it...then it's probably hazing...

HederaNaturale 05-05-2004 01:55 AM

If you wouldn't want it covered on the local news...

If you wouldn't want to tell your parents about it...

If you could potentially risk the good standing of yourself or another person by doing it...

it's probably hazing.

Basically, if you went through a HAZING Peiod, did it make you feel good at the Time?

If not, it is hazing. Period.:(

Is it right because you went through this form of hazing, (if you did), does that make it right?

When I started a Local, I stated, there will be no hazing. Back then, we had line ups, not to be malicious, but to do constuctive critisimions, pledges cleaned the House, not personel rooms. That is now Verboton!

Is it good, I cannot really say, it did not hurt me one bit, but if someone wanted to put a paddle to my butt or make me over drink, there would have been a problem! Oh, I was a Pledge of a local who went International while I was there.

That, in a nutshell, is THE real problem with hazing...it's the slow gradual (perhaps unnoticed) escalation from term to term, that will eventually lead to catastrophe if left unchecked. That, couple with the "it can't happen here" idiotic mindset, has left the greek system in the situation we find ourselves today.

Like others have posted: If you wouldn't be comfortable inviting your parents to witness what you are going through, then it's probably hazing (yeah, I know, these are not open ceremonies, but, the principle applies...if you COULD, would you?)
