Kappa Sigma @ Oregon State -- 50 Cited for Underage Drinking
Corvallis, Oregon police cited 50 minors for possession of alcohol and cited Kappa Sigma at Oregon State for furnishing alcohol to minors.
No word yet (that I know of) about any university or IFC responses. Greek life is fairly big at Oregon State, I think. Maybe there'll be some statements Monday or Tuesday? http://www.gazettetimes.com/articles...nity/loc08.txt |

In a rare move, police cited a Eugene fraternity for providing alcohol to two underage women, one of whom spent several days in the hospital recovering from a severe case of alcohol poisoning. It's very unusual for police to cite an entity rather than a person, ... Sgt. Mark Montes delivered the ticket Thursday to Theta Chi president Robert McEachern. The fraternity is charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor and allowing minors to consume alcohol during a Dec. 1 party at its house at 1125 E. 19th Ave. The University of Oregon banned alcohol from its fraternities in 2002. |
Alcohol banned from fraternities? Thank God I don't live in Oregon.
|
aren't a large majority of fraternities dry?

I think the last number I saw nationally was that twelve (12) national fraternities have banned alcohol in their houses. I may be incorrect. The "majority," hope for moderation in consumption, but situations like the ones above and others in this forum aren't helping much. |
I recently had correspondence with a Phi Delt big wheel, and asked him what the experience of other natl. GLOs that had banned alcohol was.
He replied "What others?" implying that Phi Delt was the only one nationally. Phi Delts have been very happy with their five years of dryness, and point to better grades, more pledges, better housing, and more good in general. They hired a prof to study the results. |
Good think he gave them the results they were paying for, it would have been embarrassing otherwise.

U of O participated in Select 2000, so all Greeks there at that time knew those changes were coming. I pledged in 1996, and even then we were preparing for a dry Greek system.
It's also not strange that the cops cited the whole fraternity. Eugene cops have been doing underhanded things like that for years. They just bust into any old house and cite anyone who lives there if there is a party, whether they were participating or not. Busting fraternities must be a new thing, but the cops are bored in Eugene. I guess busting pot smoking hippies is too easy. |
I am the risk management officer for my chapter
I will now tolerate any hazing in my chapter. Hazing is terrible and wrong. It hurts my new members as men and as people. My chapter's new member program is only 6 weeks long! It so great. We always announce that during rush and we always have the best numbers. It's wonderful. Well, Brian and I are going to get to bed. Good night everyone.

6 weeks? Thats so good to hear. Obviously any period longer than this will build character, and thats not what we look for. We simply want everyone. One big giant lovefest around here.
|
Many Nationals are suggesting 6-8 week pledge periods.
Some may even be mandating it, but I'm not sure of that. |
I believe ours has a limit, but I also believe the best chapters ignore it.

Haha, aren't most suppose to be dry?
Phi Delt here is anything but dry. Nationals making rules is only so everyone can hide the alcohol for a week. |
