Another Recruitment Question
To my NPHC/NPC/IFC folks:
On your campuses do you have an all greek informational? Or When NPC/IFC begin fall recruitment do you invite NPHC/MGC members to speak to potential new members? I ask because at my university we had a problem with women (more so than men) being lied to about NPHC/MGC membership. For example, NPC women were telling girls you had to be a certain ethnic background to join. Or that there were only 4 sororities on campus, completely ignoring the 9 other sororities that made up our Multicultural Greek Council. Our Greek Life advisor asked me to come speak at a recruitment event to clear up misconceptions about NPHC/MGC groups. |
I seem to remember at least one time where the NPHC groups participated in "Meet the Greeks", the pre-rush event where every group has a table with a display and several members there to talk to the women. Lol, the set up kind of reminded me of a job fair with tables and the girls just going wherever they wanted (although most did do it methodically- went to every table in order). I don't know if any of the multicultural groups participated (of course, to my knowledge, there's only Theta Nu Xi at Pitt).
I know that it's not really the "style" of NPHC rush, but it did at least let the girls know that they were out there. Also, perhaps the girls didn't really realize that they were "lying".... they may be misinformed or ignorant of the other groups on campus. In which case some sort of all greek event (with at least the leaders of the groups) where the different groups can learn about each other would be beneficial? |
At my school we also had a "meet the Greeks" type of thing where every NPC group had a table. The NPHC organizations did not participate. I also have heard that there are some differences between the NPHC rush style and the NPC formal rush. Like for the NPHC rush, a potential new member focuses her interest on 1 group rather than all. It sounded like the expectation was that the PNM would have previously done research on the organization and already have made contacts with some of the members. TheEpitome1920, is this correct?

At NAU we have two sororities that are not NPC, but are recognized by it. So since they cannot participate in all of recruitment they are invited to the first night. This is info night. So instead of the PMs just visiting the 6 NPC sororities they do also stop by the other two as well... But if they decide to go through recruitment with those two sororities they have to drop out of formal recruitment entirely...

We have an Organization Fair called "Blast Off" and ALL greeks are represented, and it's held before school even starts. So before recruitment even starts, girls know which orgs exist, under what councils, whether they are participating in NPC rush. The two councils DO interact, but don't compete for girls b/c by the time either council starts recruitment/intake, the girls already have an idea of what they want.

At my school we have an activities fair that all of the clubs and all of the fraternities and sororities are at before rush starts. When we do rush here, all of the sororities do it. We only have one NPHC sorority. They also do rush. Rush here is a modified version of NPC rush. Sigma Gamma Rho has a Rho Chi and they do rush rooms and stuff, but they don't do bid matching.
|
We have both an activities fair, where are Greek Organizations are represented along with other campus organizations, and a Greek information session the second week of school (we participate in delayed recruitment). I'm not sure to what extend NPHC/etc are portrayed, but information does reach the appropriate parties.

during the first weeks of school every greek (and some non greek clubs... but mainly greeks) have tables on the quad (NPC has a panhellenic table we do together) and people can stop by and chat with members and give their info. it's informal people can goto whatever tables or none at all... and it's not scheduled or anything people just stop by tables on their way to class or into the union.. this is actually pretty much the ONLY way that we get people to rush since our school doesn't allow dorm storm or allow us to contact freshman over the summer... Then the first night of NPC rush is "open house" where each chapter has a table and the PNMs get to visit each one.

NPHC participated in "Go Greek" (info night) and the first round of parties (ice waters) of NPC recruitment. Every woman participating in recruitment at least met the women of the NPHC groups on our campus, and got information as to what they are about and stand for. NPHC then had their own recruitment in the spring, as they didn't recruit in the fall or 1st quarter/semester freshman. I think it was a great experience and made me more well rounded because I had the chance to meet these women, and learn about something I probably otherwise wouldn't have.
