Topic: New book on the History of Step shows
To the Group -
I recently had the opportunity to develop a website for a new book entitled, "SOULSTEPPING: African American Step Shows." The Author, Dr. Elizabeth Fine, has done some excellent research and has produced what is probably the "definitive" book on the origins, development, and politics surrounding stepshows and their growth. You can see the website here: Soulstepping: African American Step Shows FYI, right now, it's on a preview server -- it will be moved to it's own domain over the weekend. Check it out! |
i saw an ad for this on a website and didn't check it out... i thought it was a stepshow tape. :p I'm looking forward to picking this up when I get a chance.

I already own Dr. Fine's book and it is an excellent read. Even though I'm not an NPHC member, I still found it very informative learning about stepping and its roots (especially since there are chapters of my sorority that participate in stepping).

Has anyone ever seen Step Afrika perform? They came to my school last year, and gave a great performance. They do a great job of incorporating the history of stepping, from African dance to the South African Boot dance, to old school yard shows.
